IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided maps gives an idea about the development and changes that took place in the Beechwood Farm between 1950 and present.
During this period, technological changes along with improvement in connectivity took place, which also includes the construction of residential buildings and camps.
The main highlight of the changes that took place during this period is the construction of road over the older tracks. Earlier in 1950, the Northern part of track was mostly occupied with the sheep, But in present, solar panels had been placed in the western region of it, while in the eastern part, camps have been placed and a parking is opened. The fruit tree region now also has its own farm shop opened. The Barn is now shifted to the west of vegetables farm along the road, while in place of barn, Holiday cottages are opened which has its separate parking on the other side of the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify several important changes, including the replacement of tracks by roads, the addition of a farm shop, camping and holiday cottages, and the relocation of the barn. These details are generally relevant and show a reasonable understanding of the plans. The comparison of the sheep area with the present-day camping and solar-panel areas also attempts to describe how land use changed. However, some locations are misreported: the solar panels are in the north-east, not the western region, and the barn is south-west of the farmhouse rather than west of the vegetable field. The response also lacks a clear overview of the site’s overall transformation and gives little attention to features that remained, such as the farmhouse, chickens and river. A more accurate, balanced summary would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic progression from an introductory statement to a description of changes, and phrases such as “During this period” and “while” help signal comparison. However, the organisation is not consistently clear: several separate changes are packed into one long paragraph, and the reader has to work out how the locations relate to one another. The opening also makes a broad claim about development without setting out the main changes as a concise overview. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “now” and “in present.” Group the information into a clear overview and one or two paragraphs organised by area or type of change, and use precise references to guide the reader around the plans.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing development, including “construction,” “connectivity,” “residential buildings,” and “occupied.” This allows you to communicate several changes, and the meaning is usually understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, such as “camps” for the camping field, “a parking is opened,” and “the fruit tree region.” “Technological changes” is also a broad description that does not clearly identify the specific additions shown. Choose established map-description terms such as “camping field,” “car park,” “area of fruit trees,” and “solar panels.” More precise vocabulary would make the comparisons clearer and reduce ambiguity without requiring more elaborate wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a complex sentence beginning “During this period” and a comparison using “while.” The main ideas can generally be followed, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The provided maps gives” has subject–verb disagreement, and “changes that took place in the Beechwood Farm” uses an awkward article and preposition pattern. Tense and passive forms are also inconsistent in “solar panels had been placed” and “a parking is opened,” while the capitalisation of “But” after a comma is incorrect. Review agreement, articles and prepositions, and use the present simple for features shown today and the past simple for the 1950 plan. Breaking up the long final sentence would also improve control.
