Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans compare how Beechwood Farm looked back in 1950 and how it looks nowadays.

Overall, the farm has significantly developed in the last 75 years by building new road instead of track and adding new developments like parking or solar panels; however the farm changed part of its business by exchanging farming sheep to runing agriculture business.

In 1950, northen part of the farm was purposed for farming sheep, while south-western corner of the farm was used for growing fruits and veggies. In the smaller, south-eastern corner of the farm were placed barn and farmhouse, and was designated area for farming chickes.

Nowadays, part of the south-western corner is used as farm shop, but the rest of the fields are still being used for croping fruits and vegetables. Between fields and south-eastern corner of the farm there is now located small barn and the old barn was redesigned and is now used as holiday cottage. Northern part of the farm is now devided on western and eastern part. In western part there is huge camping field with parking, and the eastern part is now filed with solar panels and parking. Moreover, track was exchanged by road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You provide a clear comparison between 1950 and today, with a relevant overview that identifies the shift from a track to roads and the addition of facilities such as parking and solar panels. You also correctly note that the fruit and vegetable plots remain and that the sheep area has changed. These points address the main transformation, and the response includes details from both plans. However, some important changes are unclear or inaccurately described: the former barn is not shown as converted into holiday cottages; the cottages are a new feature south of the eastern road, while the barn remains near the road junction. The farm shop’s position and the two parking areas could also be reported more precisely. This gives a sound account, but not all key features are fully developed or accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing the earlier and current layouts. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “while,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between ideas. The progression is generally logical, moving from the southern fields to the northern area. Some connections and references are less clear, however. For example, “Between fields and south-eastern corner … there is now located small barn” is difficult to interpret, and the sentence about the old barn being redesigned as cottages combines features in a way that obscures their locations. Use shorter, more precisely linked sentences and organise the present-day changes by area to make the progression more consistently clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of map-related vocabulary, including “south-western corner,” “fields,” “farm shop,” “camping field,” and “solar panels.” These terms help communicate the main features, and some attempts at more specific language are evident. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “northen,” “chickes,” “croping,” “devided,” and “filed” make the description less polished. Several phrases are also unnatural, such as “exchanging farming sheep” and “runing agriculture business”; the intended change in land use would be clearer with standard collocations. Aim for accurate forms and natural map-description vocabulary, especially when describing what facilities replaced or were added. This would make your otherwise understandable account more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including contrasts with “while” and clauses introduced by “but” and “however.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, and the past-to-present comparison is generally maintained. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “by building new road” needs an article, while “In the smaller, south-eastern corner … were placed barn and farmhouse” has awkward word order and missing articles. In “there is now located small barn,” the structure is also not well controlled. Practise straightforward patterns such as “A barn and farmhouse were located…” and “A road has replaced the track.” More accurate sentence forms would support your attempts at complex structures.
