IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The picture illustrates the evolution of beechwood farm from 1950 to today.
Overall, the beechwood farm has evolved by addition of several shops and designated areas for certain activities. One of the major revolution is the conversion of tracks to roads.
In the year 1950 beechwood farm was much simpler with specific areas designed for fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, chikens, sheeps. There were tracks separating the area of sheeps from other commodities.
Comparitively, today the space has been utilized for various purposes. A farm shop is now present along the fruit tress. Previously, barn occupied larger space that is now reduced and that space have been allocated to holiday cottages. The barn now lies at the interlink of roads. Whereas, the chicken and farmhouse are at similar location as in 1950.
The greatest change is in the sheep area that has now been converted to camping field with addition of parking lot adjacentto the road along farmshop. Another parking lot has been added across the road from holiday cottages. Moreover, the solar panels have also been installed in the North of this parking lot.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main transformation from a relatively simple farm to a site with new facilities, and your overview highlights the conversion of tracks into roads. You also compare several features, including the continued locations of the farmhouse and chicken enclosure, the addition of a farm shop, parking, cottages and solar panels, and the change from sheep pasture to camping. These details address the task and are generally grounded in the plans. However, some descriptions are imprecise or over-generalised: the barn is described as having occupied a larger space and then being reduced, whereas the plans mainly show it relocated to the southern road junction. The location of the first parking area is also unclear. More precise comparisons of the unchanged fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas would strengthen the account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the earlier plan and then the present-day changes. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Comparitively,” and “Moreover” help signal shifts between points. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the main ideas are grouped sensibly. However, some connections are abrupt or unclear, particularly “Whereas, the chicken and farmhouse are at similar location,” which is not smoothly attached to the preceding sentence. The sequence of new facilities in the final paragraph also feels like a list rather than a fully organised comparison. Use clearer referencing and group changes by location or function to make cohesion more flexible and less dependent on transition words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “conversion,” “allocated,” “designated areas,” and “interlink,” and the reader can generally understand the changes you describe. However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “chikens,” “sheeps,” “Comparitively,” and “fruit tress.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “major revolution,” “along the fruit trees,” and “space has been utilized for various purposes.” Repetition of “area,” “space,” and “road” further limits flexibility. Aim for accurate map vocabulary and natural collocations, for example, “major change,” “beside the fruit trees,” and “land has been repurposed.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise location phrases would make the description clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex structures, including the relative clause in “that is now reduced” and the contrast introduced by “Whereas.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors occur in agreement, articles, tense and sentence construction. For example, “One of the major revolution is” needs plural agreement and a suitable article, while “that space have been allocated” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. “The chicken and farmhouse are at similar location” also needs an article and a more accurate plural construction. The fragment beginning “Whereas” is not joined effectively to a main clause. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, consistent past-versus-present reference, and correct articles and agreement; this will improve accuracy while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
