Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two pictures compares area of beechwood farm that has been developed from 1950 to by today.

Overall, the major alterations observed by today is in the area reserved for sheep previously, with addition of parking spots and solar energy supply. There is also introduction of holiday cottages in the area that was barn in 1950s.

First of all, in 1950s most of the area was left empty for sheep grazing which is encircled by a track leading to the main road. On the other hand, one third of the remaining area was reserved for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables . However, some of the part is barn besides the track along with a farmhouse and chickens in the last third of total area.

By today, lots of developments have been made in sheep area with the addition of camping fields in the major half and solar panels in the other half with two parking spots additionally. There developed cottages for vacations in the barn area next to the track and small farm shop with the fruit trees near to the main road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the broad change from sheep grazing to new visitor and energy facilities, and you compare the farm in 1950 with its present layout. The overview also notes the farm shop and holiday cottages, which are relevant developments. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the camping field and solar panels are not simply divisions of the former sheep area, and the cottages are south of the eastern road, rather than replacing the barn. The barn remains on the site, while the farmhouse and chicken enclosure also remain. The description of the original layout as mostly empty and the present-day changes as “lots of developments” is too general. More precise locations and a fuller account of what stayed the same would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the 1950 layout and the present day. Time markers such as “in 1950s” and “By today” help signal the comparison, and “On the other hand” and “However” attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, particularly in the sentence about “one third of the remaining area” and “the last third of total area.” These proportions are not clearly established, and the reader has to infer which locations are being described. Some linking phrases also suggest contrast where a simple addition or location would be clearer. Grouping features by area and using direct references such as “to the east” or “south of the farmhouse” would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing change and land use, including “addition,” “reserved,” “grazing,” “solar panels,” and “holiday cottages.” These choices make the main topic clear, and you attempt more specific expressions such as “area reserved for sheep.” Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “solar energy supply” is less natural than “solar panels,” and “developed cottages for vacations” does not clearly express that cottages were built or added. “Major half” and “last third” are also awkward and make the spatial description less precise. Aim for standard map-description phrases such as “was converted into,” “is located,” and “was replaced by,” while checking that each phrase accurately describes the plan.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrastive opening with “Overall” and a sentence beginning “On the other hand.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “The two pictures compares” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the major alterations … is” also needs plural agreement. The opening phrase “from 1950 to by today” uses an incorrect time construction, and “There developed cottages” is not a well-formed way to describe a change. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “in 1950s.” Practise accurate past and present forms for map comparisons, and check agreement and sentence construction before submitting.
