Student answer (Band 6.0)

THE TWO PICTURES SHOWS THE TRANSFORMATION OF BEECHWOOD FARM FROM 1950 TO PRESENT.

OVERALL, THE FARM SITE HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED SUBSTANTIALLY OVERTIME. CONSTRUCTION OF PARKING, CAMPING FIELD AND SOLAR PANELS CAN BE SEEN TODAY AT THE OLD SHEEP FARM. FURTHERMORE, HOLIDAY COTTAGE AND FARM SHOP HAS BEEN OPENED IN THE BARN AREA AND FRUIT FARMING AREA RESPECTIVELY.

IN 1950, HUGE AREA AT NORTH OF TRACK WAS DESIGNATED FOR SHEEP FARMING. THERE IS BLACK TOPPED ROAD RUNNING FROM NORTH TO WEST AND A LONG RIVER CROSSING THE ROAD AND SURROUNDING THE FARM. THE FARM SOUTH OF THE TRACK WAS DISTRIBUTED FOR GROWING FRUIT TRESS, SOFT FRUITS, VEGETABLES AND CHICKEN. IN ADDITION, A FARMHOUSE WAS BUIT BETWEEN BARREN LAND AND CHICKENS GROWING AREA.

AT PRESENT, SHEEP FARMING AREA HAS BEEN ALLOCATED FOR PARKING, CAMPING FIELD AND NEW SET OF SOLAR PANELS HAS BEEN INSTALLED. FARM SHOP HAS BEEN CONSUTRCUTED INSIDE FRUIT GROWING AREA. TRACK IS CHANGED TO ROAD AND THIS CAN LEAD TO BARN AREA. THE OLD BARN AREA HAS BEEN CHANGED TO HOLIDAY COTTAGES FOR THE TOURIST.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main change from a working farm to a site with visitor and energy facilities, and your overview mentions parking, camping, solar panels, a farm shop and holiday cottages. You also compare the former sheep area with its present uses and note that the track became a road. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the cottages occupy the area around the former farmhouse, not the old barn area, and the barn remains on the site. The farmhouse and chicken enclosure also remain, but this is not reported. The river is described, though its unchanged position could be made clearer. More precise coverage of what stayed and what changed, alongside accurate locations, would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for 1950 and today. This makes the time comparison easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “At present” help signal the stages. Some connections are less clear, however. The overview’s claim that cottages opened “in the Barn area” conflicts with the later description, and the sentence about the farmhouse being “between barren land and chickens growing area” is difficult to interpret. The final paragraph also lists changes without consistently relating them to their former locations. Use clearer location references and organise each paragraph around comparable areas or features.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a farm plan, including “designated,” “allocated,” “transformed,” and “installed,” and the reader can generally understand the changes. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “sheep farm” is better expressed as “sheep-grazing area,” “black topped road” as “main road,” and “chickens growing area” as “chicken enclosure.” There are also spelling errors in “tress,” “buit,” and “consutrcuted,” which reduce precision. “Barren land” is not supported by the plan, which shows a barn and farmhouse. Aim for accurate map vocabulary and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including passive constructions such as “has been allocated” and “has been installed,” as well as a relative clause in “a long river crossing the road.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. The opening should be “The two pictures show,” not “shows,” and “a huge area … was designated” needs an article. In “a farm shop and holiday cottage has been opened,” the compound subject requires “have,” while “a new set … has been installed” needs an article. Tense and sentence construction also need attention in “the farm south of the track was distributed for growing.” Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete, natural sentence patterns.
