IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The figures illustrate the development of the site of Beechwood farm in 1950 and the present day.
Overall, the farm has undergone substantial modernization, with new facilities and improved infrastructure enhancing convenience and accessibility.
In 1950, the site comprised a barn, farmhouse, pasture, and soft fruits, fruit trees and vegetables plantation. The pasture area for sheep was almost half of the site, located at the topmost area, above the track road. The plantation was at the left side below the track road. Whereas, the barn and farmhouse as well as poultry housing on the right side of the plantation. The lower part of the site was connected to a river.
Currently, several major developments have taken place. The pasture area has been abolished and converted into a camping field and a solar farm, each with its own parking area. The road has been paved, and the barn has been relocated to the midpoint of the road, while holiday cottages have been built on its original site. The plantation, farmhouse, and poultry house remain in their original positions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You give a clear overview of substantial change and identify several key features, including the loss of the sheep pasture, the addition of camping and solar facilities, and the development of holiday cottages. The comparison also notes that the fruit-growing areas, farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain. However, some details are inaccurate or insufficiently precise: the barn was not relocated to the midpoint of the road; it is shown near the southern road junction, southwest of the farmhouse. The cottages are south of the eastbound road, rather than clearly on the barn’s original site. The claim that each new facility has its own parking area is also misleading. More exact descriptions of the new layout and the unchanged fields would make the report more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and two chronological detail paragraphs. The progression from the 1950 layout to the present-day changes is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In 1950” and “Currently” help signal the stages of comparison. Most information is grouped sensibly, although the final paragraph moves quickly through several changes and could distinguish the new northern facilities from the eastern buildings more clearly. The sentence beginning “Whereas, the barn…” is also an awkward fragment, which interrupts the flow between the description of the plantations and the buildings. Use a complete contrast sentence and clearer spatial grouping to make the cohesion more consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing change and location, including “substantial modernization,” “converted into,” “relocated” and “original positions.” These choices allow you to summarise the main developments without repeating basic verbs throughout. Some collocations and labels are less precise for a site plan: “plantation” is not the most natural term for the fruit and vegetable plots, and “poultry housing” is less direct than “chicken enclosure.” “Solar farm” also overstates what the map shows, which is four solar panels. In addition, “track road” is an imprecise combination. Choose the map’s own labels where possible, and use specific terms such as “fields,” “internal road” and “solar panels” to improve precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the overview clause “with new facilities and improved infrastructure enhancing convenience and accessibility” and the contrast between past and present. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. Some grammatical issues remain, however. “Whereas, the barn and farmhouse…” is a dependent clause without a main clause, so connect it to the preceding sentence or rewrite it as a complete sentence. In “fruit trees and vegetables plantation,” the noun phrase needs clearer number and structure, while “The plantation, farmhouse, and poultry house remain” uses a singular subject that does not agree with the plural list. Review sentence completeness and agreement, and check punctuation after introductory contrast markers.
