Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pictures below presents the difference of how much the Beechwood Farm has developed today since 1950.

Overall, the area has been the same with developments. The field of vegetables and soft fruits are the same but a farm shop has been added by the road in the fruit trees field. The whole track has been turned into a road with addition of Barn on the triangular junction road which previously existed right by the side of the road near the farmhouse. The previous Barn is now transformed into Holiday Cottages area.

Looking at the other side of the road, the sheep field has been groomed alot. A Parking has been added right next to the Main road and farm road. The whole field has been separeated into two parts, one side is used for camping nowadays. The other side of the field is reserved and solar panels hav been installed there with a parking space alongside the farm road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several important changes, including the farm shop, the conversion of the track into a road, the holiday cottages, and the new camping and solar-panel areas. The overview also recognises that some agricultural uses remain. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the original barn was not transformed into holiday cottages; the cottages occupy the area south of the eastern road, while the barn remains and is located south-west of the farmhouse. The description of the sheep field being “groomed” is also unclear, and the current parking areas and retained farmhouse and chicken enclosure are not reported clearly. To strengthen the response, describe the main changes precisely and compare the locations of the buildings and land uses more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing changes in different parts of the farm. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement, and phrases such as “Looking at the other side of the road” help signal a shift in focus. However, the progression within the overview is sometimes difficult to follow because several changes are packed into one sentence, and references such as “the previous Barn” and “the whole field” are not always clear. The contrast between the two parking areas could also be organised more explicitly. Use clearer topic sentences and link each change to a specific location so that the comparisons are easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing maps, including “triangular junction,” “farmhouse,” “camping,” and “solar panels,” and the reader can generally understand the changes you intend to describe. However, some word choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task. “Groomed” does not clearly describe the change to the sheep field, while “reserved” is vague for the area where solar panels were installed. There are also spelling errors in “alot,” “separeated,” and “hav,” and “A Parking” is an awkward phrase. Aim for precise map language such as “converted,” “divided,” and “located,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the comparison beginning “which previously existed,” and most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless reduce accuracy. The opening should be “The pictures below present,” not “presents,” and “the field of vegetables and soft fruits are” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “A Parking has been added,” the article and noun construction are incorrect; “A parking area has been added” would be clearer. The sentence about the barn and cottages also has an unclear relative clause, making the relationship between the buildings difficult to understand. Practise agreement, articles, and sentence construction while keeping comparisons direct.
