IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The plans below show the site of a Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the same site today. It is quite visible that the site has changed drastically in almost 75 years. With growing population and emergence of diverse technologies, solar panels, holiday cottages, camping fields are few amongst many changes that have taken place over the years.
Earlier, the plan included a vast grazing area solely for sheep which was later bifurcated to multiple sections including two parkings, camping field and installation of solar panels. Producing electricity through solar panels indicates that utilizing our natural resources effeciently is one of the precious gift given by science and technology.
Additionally, the earlier track is now constructed to a fully developed road however, with same dimensions as earlier. Moreover, the area including fruit trees is now utilsed by a fram shop as well. Barn earlier occupied a large land which was later shifted to a smaller portion situated right below the intersection of roads. The earlier space taken by Barn is now replaced with various holiday cottages for tourists.
Lastly, it is imperative to note that that the area still remained the same for soft fruits, vegetables, farmhouse and chickens.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify several important changes, including the conversion of the sheep area to camping and parking, the addition of solar panels and holiday cottages, and the development of the track into a road. You also note that the soft-fruit and vegetable areas, farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain. These comparisons address the task, and the opening gives a clear overall sense of substantial change. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the fruit-tree area remains, while the farm shop is added beside it; the barn is relocated rather than simply reduced in size; and the former sheep area is not described as being divided into “multiple sections” with enough precision. The claim that the road has the same dimensions is unsupported. More exact coverage of the main layout changes would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing changes, with “Additionally” and “Lastly” helping signal progression. The reader can generally follow the comparison between 1950 and today. However, the organisation is not consistently based on clear groups of features, and some links between ideas are abrupt. For example, the discussion moves from the sheep area to a comment about the benefits of solar technology, which interrupts the map description. “Earlier” is also repeated to introduce several changes, making the cohesion somewhat mechanical. Grouping the changes by location or by land use, and using clearer references such as “the former sheep pasture” or “the eastern section,” would make the progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing change, including “bifurcated,” “installation,” “intersection,” and “replaced,” and the main ideas remain understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “it is imperative to note.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a map report: “two parkings” should be “two parking areas,” “a fram shop” is misspelled, and “utilsed” is also misspelled. “Bifurcated” is an awkward choice for land being divided into different uses, while “precious gift given by science and technology” is overly evaluative and not suitable for an objective summary. More precise, neutral terms would improve control and appropriacy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “which” and “however,” and most of the intended meaning is clear. Some grammatical errors remain. In “solar panels, holiday cottages, camping fields are few amongst many changes,” the construction needs an article and a more suitable phrase, such as “are a few of the many changes.” The sentence beginning “Earlier, the plan included…” has an unclear passive construction in “was later bifurcated to multiple sections.” There is also a repeated “that” in “note that that the area,” and “the area still remained” combines two past-time forms unnecessarily. More careful editing of articles, clause structure and tense would make the varied sentences more accurate.
