IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The maps illustrate the layout of Beechwood farm in 1950 and significant changes that have taken place on the same site today.
Overall, the farm has transformes from a purely agricultural site focused on livestock and crops into a more diversified facility that combines remaining farming activities with tourism and renewable energy. While the crop fields, farmhouse and chicken areas have remained largely unchanged, the sheep pasture has disappeared and new facilities such as a farm shop, holiday cottages, a camping field, solar panels and parking areas have been introduced. The original tracks have also been upgraded to roads.
In 1950, the western part of the far contained three fields for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables, bordered by a river to the south and a main road to the north. A network of tracks ran through the site, connecting barn, farmhouse and chicken enclosure in the south-east, while a large area in the north-east was used for sheep.
Today, the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables fields still occupy the same positions on the western side, although a farm shop has been added near theetrance beside the fruit trees. The farmhouse and chicken areas remain in their previous locations. Howeverr, the old barn has been removed and replaced by holiday cottages, while a new barn now stands nearr the junction of the roads close to the farmhouse.
The most dramatic changes can be seen in the north-eastern section. The former sheep pasture has been completely redeveloped into a camping field with tents and a large tree, several rows of solar panels, and two packing areas. The old tracks have been converrted into proper roads that now serve the new facilities

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response gives a clear overview of the farm’s shift from agriculture towards tourism and renewable energy, and it identifies several important changes: the sheep area’s redevelopment, new visitor facilities, and the conversion of tracks into roads. It also accurately notes that the crop fields, farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain in place. These comparisons are generally well selected and supported with location details. However, a few claims are imprecise: the crop fields are not all simply in the same positions, and the original barn was not removed; the plan shows a barn still present, with its position changed. Calling the parking areas “packing areas” also misreports a feature. More precise comparison of the buildings and site layout would strengthen an otherwise well-developed account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview, and chronological descriptions of the earlier and current layouts. Its progression from the overall transformation to the western fields and then the north-eastern area is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In 1950,” “Today,” and “However” help signal the comparisons, while references to locations generally make the map details clear. The final paragraph, though, ends abruptly without punctuation, and the account could connect the changes in the eastern area more smoothly to the earlier description of the barn and farmhouse. Some repeated use of “old” and “new” also makes the comparison less precise. Overall, cohesion is clear, with a few lapses in completion and refinement.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “diversified facility,” “redeveloped,” “renewable energy,” and “converted into.” These choices help convey the broad transformation and show attempts to use less common language. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “transformes,” “far,” “theetrance,” “Howeverr,” “nearr,” and “converrted” appear to be slips, while “packing areas” is an inaccurate choice for parking areas. “Proper roads” is also less formal and exact than “internal roads.” The phrase “large tree” adds a detail not supported by the plan, which depicts a tree but does not establish its size. More careful proofreading and precise map vocabulary would improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a useful mix of simple and complex structures, including the overview sentence beginning “While the crop fields…” and the contrast introduced by “although.” Most relationships between features are expressed clearly, and the present and past time frames are generally distinguished. Some grammatical control is still uneven: “the farm has transformes” has an incorrect verb form, and “connecting barn, farmhouse and chicken enclosure” needs clearer article use. The final sentence is incomplete in presentation because it ends without a full stop, and the paragraph itself feels unfinished. These issues do not usually prevent understanding, but they keep the range from being consistently controlled. Check verb forms, articles, and sentence completion during proofreading.
