IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given layouts compare the location of a Beechwood Farm in 1950 and at present.
Overall, it is evident that significant changes were made in the layout. An addition of recreational facilities, such as camping site and holiday cottages were noted.
In 1950, fruits and vegetables were grown in the centre of the farm, along with there were various tracks on one side and a river flowed at other end. At the northern side of the farm, an area was designated for grazing sheep. Below the tracks there was a barn, a farmhouse and an area for keeping chickens.
At present, a farm shop was added near the fruit trees. Tracks were replaced by roads. The area for grazing sheep was allocated to camping sites and two parking areas. Solar panels were also installed at the northern area of the farm. A barn was moved adjacent to the roads and holiday cottages were built in place of a barn.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main contrast between the farm’s earlier agricultural use and its newer visitor facilities, and your overview mentions camping and holiday cottages. Several key changes are also reported, including the farm shop, roads, parking and solar panels. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the sheep area became a camping field, while the two parking areas are separate additions rather than both replacing that area. More importantly, the barn was not moved to replace the cottages; the cottages occupy the area east of the farmhouse, while the barn remains near the southern road junction. The farmhouse, chickens and productive fields largely remain. Covering these relationships more precisely would make the account more complete and better developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a brief overview, and separate paragraphs for 1950 and today. This makes the chronological comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “In 1950” and “At present” guide the reader effectively. The progression is nevertheless somewhat list-like, with limited links between related changes. For example, the account could group the retained fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas together, then contrast the former sheep pasture with the new camping field and solar panels. Some references, such as “one side,” “other end” and “below the tracks,” are not sufficiently precise for a map description. More explicit location-based linking would strengthen cohesion and progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “designated,” “grazing,” “replaced,” “adjacent” and “installed,” and the main changes are generally understandable. There is some flexibility in describing land use and facilities, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “layouts compare the location of a Beechwood Farm” is awkward, “camping site” is less accurate than “camping field,” and “at the northern area” is not a natural location phrase. “Fruits and vegetables were grown” also overlooks the specific fruit-tree and soft-fruit plots. Aim for precise labels from the plan and natural collocations, such as “the farm layouts,” “a camping field,” and “in the north-east corner.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple sentences and some more complex forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. However, some grammatical errors and awkward constructions limit accuracy. In “An addition of recreational facilities, such as camping site and holiday cottages were noted,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the examples need articles or plural forms. “Along with there were various tracks” is not a well-formed clause; use a structure such as “and there were several tracks.” The phrase “a river flowed at other end” also needs an article, while “a barn was moved adjacent to the roads” would be clearer as “the barn was located beside the road.” Check agreement, articles and clause construction, while continuing to vary sentence forms.
