IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The maps diagram illustrate the location of a Beechwood farm in 1950 and compare it wih the present time.
Overall, the site had a lot of developments throughout that period, the sheep area is converted into solar panels and camping field. Although the river and some other shops remains unchanged.
In 1950, the noth side of the map consisted of an area for sheep that is now converted into a space for parking, solar panels and camping feild. The track that was fencing this area is now transformed into proper road.
Beside this, that road now leads to a small barn. In 1950, the barn was beside the track that is now shifted to other side and that portion is now transffered into holiday cottages.
The farm house and the chickens area near the river directly facing the barn remains unchanged. A small farm shop is constructed in the fruit tree area.
While, portion for vegetables and soft fruits remains unaltered.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main change from sheep pasture to a mix of visitor and energy facilities, and you note that the river and the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas largely remain. You also report the addition of a farm shop and holiday cottages, so the response covers several important comparisons. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the 1950 barn is not simply shifted to the other side, and the present barn is at the southern end of the road junction, southwest of the farmhouse. The farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain in roughly the same area, but the barn does not directly face them as your wording suggests. Develop the overview more precisely and describe the main changes in location with clearer comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information. Some linking is also attempted, for example with “Overall,” “In 1950,” and “Beside this.” However, the progression within the detail paragraphs is not always clear, and “Beside this” does not specify which feature is being compared. The sentence beginning “Although” is a fragment, while “While” at the start of the final sentence creates an incomplete contrast. Group the changes by area or by what stayed and what changed, and use explicit references such as “in the north-east” or “south of the farmhouse” to make relationships easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “converted,” “track,” “holiday cottages,” “farm shop” and “remains unchanged,” which helps communicate the main developments. There is some variety in how you describe change, but several choices are imprecise or awkward: “the track that was fencing this area” does not accurately describe its role, and “transferred into holiday cottages” is not a natural way to describe land use. Spelling errors such as “wih,” “noth,” “feild” and “transffered” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise location and land-use language, and check spelling carefully. For example, use “bordered” for a feature beside an area and “redeveloped as” for a change in use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview contrast and the relative clause in “the track that was fencing this area.” However, errors in sentence construction and agreement are noticeable. “The maps diagram illustrate” has an incorrect noun form and verb agreement, while “the river and some other shops remains unchanged” has a plural subject with a singular verb. The opening “Although” clause is not completed, and “While, portion for vegetables…” is also a fragment. Tense and article use are inconsistent in phrases such as “the present time” and “a space for parking.” Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement when the subject contains multiple features.
