IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
I would illustrate the beechwood farm map in 1950 as we can see there is a fruit trees , soft fruits and vegetables besides a river and on the other side there is a track.
Now if you see the other side of the map there is a barn beside track a farmhouse and a chickens.
Moreover there is also a huge space for the sheep on the other side of the track.
Now I will illustrate today’s map which is bit different from 1950’s
Besides river there is a farm shop nearby fruit trees , soft fruits , vegetables these are in between river and road.
If I show you the other side of the road
There is a parking , camping field ,solar panels.
Nearby river there is a holiday cottages, farmhouse chickens and barn .
Barn is connected via road.
As I discussed there is a huge difference In both maps.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify several relevant features in both plans, including the fruit and vegetable plots, river, sheep area, farm shop, camping field, solar panels and the buildings. However, the response mainly lists features rather than summarising the main changes. The overview, “there is a huge difference,” is too general to explain that the farm has developed new visitor and energy facilities while retaining much of its agricultural use. Some locations are also unclear or inaccurate: the holiday cottages are not “nearby river,” and the barn is not simply described as connected via road. Compare the plans directly and report the key changes, such as the addition of parking and cottages and the relocation or reorganisation of access roads.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic sequence, moving from the 1950 plan to today, and paragraph breaks help distinguish the two periods. However, progression within each section is limited, and the reader has to infer how the features relate spatially. Phrases such as “on the other side” and “if I show you the other side of the road” are vague because the reference point is not consistently clear. The repeated transitions “Now,” “Moreover,” and “Besides” do not establish precise comparisons between the maps. Organise the report into a brief overview followed by grouped details, and use clear location links such as “north of the internal road” or “south of the farmhouse” to make the description easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant basic vocabulary for describing the plans, including “river,” “track,” “farmhouse,” “parking,” and “camping field,” so the reader can recognise many of the features. However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or conversational, such as “if you see,” “huge space,” and “the other side.” Some word combinations are awkward, including “a chickens” and “nearby river there is a holiday cottages,” which reduce clarity. Aim for more precise map-description language and accurate labels, for example “an area allocated to sheep,” “adjacent to,” and “a new access road.” This would help you describe positions and changes without relying on repeated general phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Most sentences are short and follow simple patterns, with few attempts to show relationships between features in more varied structures. Errors in articles, agreement and sentence construction occur throughout, as in “there is a fruit trees,” “a farmhouse and a chickens,” and “there is a holiday cottages.” The opening sentence also joins several ideas without clear punctuation, making the relationships difficult to follow. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “In both maps,” and some sentence fragments, such as “If I show you the other side of the road,” are left without a complete main clause. Practise accurate plural forms and articles, and combine details using controlled clauses such as “The farmhouse remains, while…”.
