Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the changes of Beechwood farm in 1950 and nowadays.

Overall, what stands out from the maps is that the track replaced by road and a barn are added. Another notable point is that the sheep site changed by parking, camping field and some solar panels.

To begin with, there are numerous changes shown in the park today. In the past, there were only sheep site available in north-east corner which modernized by parking space, camping field and few solar panels. In addition, the track was industrialized by road.

Following this, in the south-east corner barn redeveloped by holiday cottages and the farmhouse and chickens are remain unchanged. Furthermore, in the south-west corner only the farm shop are constructed newly and others places such as fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables are stable in their own region. Besides that the river side remain same over the whole period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main contrast between the farm in 1950 and today, including the conversion of the track into a road and the addition of visitor facilities in the former sheep area. You also correctly note that the river and the fruit-growing and vegetable areas remain broadly in place. However, some important changes are unclear or inaccurately described: the barn was not replaced by holiday cottages; it remains, while the cottages were added near the farmhouse. The farm shop is also not the only new feature in the south-west. Your overview gives a useful general direction, but the account would be stronger if it clearly distinguished retained features from additions and relocations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing changes. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with” and “Following this” help signal progression, and the reader can generally follow the comparison. However, the organisation is not consistently clear because the descriptions move between areas without precise spatial framing. For example, “in the south-east corner barn redeveloped by holiday cottages” combines several changes in a way that obscures what happened to each feature. Some linking phrases, including “Besides that,” feel mechanical, and references such as “others places” are unclear. Grouping the information more consistently by site area and using explicit contrasts between 1950 and today would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing change and location, including “replaced,” “constructed,” “remain,” and “south-west corner.” These choices communicate the general topic, but several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for map descriptions. “Industrialized by road” does not describe the track’s conversion, while “barn redeveloped by holiday cottages” gives the wrong relationship between the features. “Sheep site” and “stable in their own region” are also imprecise. Aim for standard map-reporting collocations such as “was converted into a road,” “were added,” and “remained in the same locations.” More precise vocabulary would make the comparisons clearer without requiring more elaborate wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. There are, however, some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “the farmhouse and chickens are remain unchanged” has an incorrect verb pattern, and “the farm shop are constructed” has subject–verb disagreement. In “the sheep site … which modernized,” the relative clause needs a passive form, while “the river side remain same” lacks appropriate agreement and an article. Some sentences also omit a clear verb, as in “barn redeveloped by holiday cottages.” Check that each clause has a complete verb phrase, and review singular/plural agreement and articles when describing features.
