IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
By watching both plans clearly I can summarise that there are some considerable changes in Benchwood Farm from 1950s untill today. In 1950 the farm was quite simple. Different sections were made for different items to store them in order. There was a gigantic section for sheep on one side of track.Other sections conside side-by-side on the either side of track. But if we look at the farm today we can see there is a lot evolution happened in farm untill today. The large section that was to keep sheeps was transformed totally. To meet the farm's electricity requirements solar pannels were installed just beside parking area. The old track is replaced by a road.Altough the sections for fruit tree, soft fruits and vegetables remains unchanged but there was a small addition to them.A farm shop was built just beside the fruit trees. The old barn is replaced holiday cottages. In addition to all that changes camping field was built at the place where there was a sheep places before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the broad change from a mainly agricultural farm to a site with new facilities, and you report several relevant details: solar panels, a farm shop, a camping field and holiday cottages. You also note that the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas remain. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. The barn was not replaced by cottages: the barn remains, while the cottages were added south of the eastern road. The camping field occupies part of the former sheep area, but the solar panels are in the north-east corner, not simply beside the parking area. Your overview is also implicit rather than clearly summarising the main transformation. State the overall shift and describe the key changes more precisely, including the new road and parking.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows a broadly chronological comparison, moving from the 1950 plan to the present, and linking phrases such as “In addition” help signal further changes. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, so the main overview and supporting details are not clearly separated. Several transitions are awkward or repetitive, including repeated references to “today” and “all that changes,” while “Other sections…” does not clearly explain where the plots are located. Organise the answer into a short introduction and overview, followed by a paragraph on the land-use changes and one on new facilities. Use clear spatial references and linking expressions to make the comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of vocabulary relevant to describing change, including “transformed,” “installed,” “replaced” and “addition.” These choices show an effort to go beyond basic labels. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for a map report, such as “gigantic section,” “items to store them in order,” and “a lot evolution happened.” There are also spelling errors in “pannels” and “untill,” and “sheeps” is not the correct plural. Prefer precise, neutral terms such as “large area,” “land use changed considerably,” and “the former sheep pasture.” Check spelling and collocations, and avoid conversational phrasing so that the description sounds more formal and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and some longer structures, for example “Although the sections for fruit tree, soft fruits and vegetables remains unchanged…” and “In addition to all that changes…”. This gives the response some structural variety, but control is uneven. Errors include “there is a lot evolution happened,” “the sections… remains,” and “The old barn is replaced holiday cottages,” where verb forms, agreement or sentence construction are faulty. Articles and prepositions are also missing in phrases such as “on one side of track” and “replaced holiday cottages.” Use past simple for the 1950 plan and present simple for today, and check subject–verb agreement and complete sentence patterns. More accurate complex sentences would improve clarity.
