IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pictures illustrates changes that happened from 1950 to present day of a Beechwood farm.
Overall it can be seen that there were lots of infrastructural changes happend including development of multiple new facilities, camping field, cottages etc.
In the past there was a track connecting to a main road and upperside of the track used to be sheep herding space, now track has been replaced by road which is also connecting to a Barn. Moreover, they removed the sheep herding space and replaced it with camping field on the center and there is parking spot on the north western side of the camping field. Solar panels have been installed on the north western side of the road, below it there is also parking area connected to road.
There was a Fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables areas and barn, farmhouse as well as chickens on the downside of the road. Most of it stayed the same, however, farm shop has been installed on the fruit trees area and previous barn turned into holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the broad transformation from a working farm to a site with visitor facilities, and your overview correctly highlights the addition of facilities such as camping and cottages. You also compare the former sheep area with the camping field and note that the fruit and vegetable plots remain. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate: the parking near the camping field is north-east of it, not north-west, and the solar panels are in the north-east corner, rather than on the north-western side of the road. The former barn has not become cottages; the barn remains, while the cottages occupy a separate area. The main road and river are also not clearly covered. More precise comparisons and a fuller account of the site’s layout would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, a general overview, and two paragraphs describing changes and retained features. This gives the reader a coherent route through the comparison, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “however” help connect points. At times, though, the progression is less clear because several locations are grouped together without a consistent spatial order. For example, the paragraph beginning “In the past there was a track” moves from the track to the sheep area, camping field, parking and solar panels, but the directional relationships are confusing. The final paragraph also combines retained plots and buildings with new uses. Organising details by area—west, central and east—or by what changed and what remained would make cohesion more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “infrastructural changes,” “facilities,” “camping field,” “solar panels” and “holiday cottages.” These terms help communicate the main developments, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise: “sheep herding space” is less natural than “area for sheep,” and “on the downside of the road” does not clearly describe a map location. “Farm shop has been installed on the fruit trees area” also uses an awkward verb and preposition. There is some repetition of “area” and “road,” and “lots of” is informal for this report. More precise location language and natural collocations would improve flexibility and accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “Most of it stayed the same, however…” and a relative clause in “which is also connecting to a Barn.” The overall meaning can usually be followed, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening should be “The pictures illustrate,” and “changes that happened from 1950 to present day” needs a more accurate time construction, such as “changes between 1950 and the present day.” There are also article and agreement problems in “There was a Fruit trees” and “Most of it stayed,” where the plural features require different forms. Tense choices are inconsistent, as in “used to be” alongside “has been installed.” Review agreement, articles and consistent past-versus-present descriptions.
