IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The plans illustrate the site of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and the same site in the present day.

Overall, Major developments can be seen; Solar panels are one of them, and a new camping field has been introduced with designated parking. A new barn can be seen just beside the road.

In detail, the sheep area has been redeveloped into a camping site with solar panels just beside it and a parking lot adjoining the road. Another major development is that tracks have been reconstructed into concrete roads for better mobility across the farm. The Farmhouse has been redeveloped into holiday cottages, just beside it, facing south; a new Barn has been constructed.

Turning towards the other areas, the Farms for fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables stayed unchanged, with a minor alteration in the fruit trees section; a new Farm shop has been introduced just beside the road in the North-western corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main change from sheep pasture to a camping area and note the introduction of solar panels, parking, roads and a farm shop. You also compare the continued agricultural plots with the newer facilities, giving the response a relevant overview and covering several key features. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the farmhouse remains a farmhouse, while holiday cottages are added nearby; the barn is not described as newly constructed in the plan, but is relocated to the south-west of the farmhouse. The claim that the fruit-tree area has a minor alteration is not explained, and the farm shop is between the fruit trees and internal road rather than in the north-western corner. More precise comparisons of the buildings and site layout would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. Phrases such as “Overall,” “In detail,” and “Turning towards the other areas” help signal the stages of the description, and the reader can follow the broad movement from new facilities to retained fields. However, the progression within the detail paragraphs is not always systematic, and some references are unclear. For example, “just beside it, facing south” does not make clear which feature is being located, while “Another major development” links ideas without specifying the spatial relationship. Organising the comparison by site area or by changed versus unchanged features, and using clearer location references, would make cohesion more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “redeveloped,” “adjoining,” “designated parking,” and “introduced,” and these choices communicate the main changes. There is also some variation in how you describe development, rather than relying on one verb throughout. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “Farms for fruit trees” is not a natural description of the labelled plots, and “concrete roads” adds a material detail that the plan does not show. “Better mobility” is also less appropriate for a neutral map summary than a direct description of access. More exact terms such as “fields,” “internal roads,” and “improved access” would strengthen precision and maintain an appropriately factual style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple statements and more complex structures, including “the sheep area has been redeveloped into a camping site with solar panels just beside it” and “the Farms for fruit trees, soft fruits, and vegetables stayed unchanged.” Most meanings remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation issues reduce control. In the overview, “Major developments” and “Solar panels” are unnecessarily capitalised after commas. The phrase “The Farmhouse has been redeveloped into holiday cottages, just beside it, facing south” has an unclear structure and incorrectly suggests the farmhouse itself became cottages. The final sentence also shifts from plural “Farms” to a list of plot labels. Use clearer sentence boundaries and ensure subjects and verbs describe the intended features accurately.
