IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two maps illustrate the transformation of the rural area of the beechwood farm and shows how it was in 1950 and how it looks today.
Overall, the infrastructure has been improved by the addition of many vital amenities such as building of road, parking facilities and area for sustainable energy sources. Camping and holiday cottages have been build for the leisure activities on farm. Additionally a farm shop has been constructed alongside the road, in the fruit trees area for selling various products in a convenient way.
The vast sheep area has been changed into a camping field with a parking site on its corner and solar panels were added just behind the camping area with a parking facility. The main substantial changing has been the transformation of long track into a road. The other noticeable alteration has been shifting the place of barn and building holiday cottages on its place; moreover, barn site has been connected with the road for improved transportation towards it.
However, farmhouse and chickens site has not been altered. Although fruit trees area remains the same, it has the addition of farm shop. Additionally, the river and road locations have been remained still with no alteration.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview of the main changes, especially the conversion of the sheep area into a camping field and the addition of roads, parking, solar panels and visitor facilities. You also identify features that remain, including the farmhouse, chickens and fruit trees. These points address the task and are generally grounded in the maps. However, some details are inaccurate or over-generalised: the barn was not simply shifted onto the cottages’ former site; it is shown south-west of the farmhouse, while the cottages are directly south of the eastbound road. The river remains, but the internal track has become a road, so saying the “road locations” have remained unchanged is misleading. More precise comparisons of the fields and new facilities would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing changes and features that remain. This gives the reader a generally coherent account, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Additionally” and “However” help signal relationships. The progression is not always fully controlled, though. The overview includes several details that are repeated later, while the final paragraph combines unchanged features with the farm shop without a clear organising principle. Some references are also unclear, particularly “on its place” and “towards it,” which make the barn changes harder to follow. Grouping the description by areas of the site, and using clearer references to each feature, would make the progression more precise and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “infrastructure,” “amenities,” “sustainable energy sources,” “transformation” and “transportation.” These choices show an attempt to describe the development in a formal style, and the main meaning is usually clear. However, some collocations and word choices are inaccurate or awkward, such as “main substantial changing,” “parking site on its corner” and “the river and road locations have been remained still.” There are also spelling or word-form slips, including “build” where “built” is needed and “beechwood” in the farm name. Aim for natural, precise phrases such as “major change,” “parking area” and “the river remained unchanged”; this would improve clarity and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “Although” and “However,” and most of the intended meaning can be understood. Some grammatical errors remain across the response. For example, the opening has a subject–verb agreement problem in “maps … shows,” and “have been build” uses the wrong participle. The phrase “has been remained” incorrectly combines the passive auxiliary with “remain,” while “the addition of many vital amenities such as building of road” has an incomplete article pattern. There are also tense and sentence-boundary issues in the description of changes. Review agreement, past participles, articles and the distinction between active and passive forms; more consistently accurate sentences would raise the quality.
