Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given maps show how the site of a farm named as Beechwood Farm looks today and in 1950.

Overall, the structure of the farm remained unchangned throughout the timeframe. The sheep areas underwent through major development, replaced with different public and tourism facilities. Some places were relocated, and few new areas were introduced by narrowing the existing places.

The sheep area devided into two major parts, one is for placing solar pannels while the other part is for visitor's camping. Both the parts have parking area for vehicles, and new trees were planted near to the camping field. The track in the middle of the site is now being used as a road for transportation.

The barn area relocated from front of the farmhouse to the left side and linked with road, while at the place where barn area was converted into the holiday cottages. The areas that remained untouched were farmohouse, chicken area, vegetable field and soft fruits field. Although the field of fruit trees not changed, it was narrowed and a farm shop was introduced facing to the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main transformation from a sheep area to visitor-related uses, and report several relevant changes, including the new camping field, solar panels, farm shop and holiday cottages. You also note that the internal track became a road and that the barn moved. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the two parking areas are not both within the former sheep area, and the farm shop is between the fruit trees and road rather than simply “facing” it. The overview also overstates continuity: the farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain, but the barn and road layout change, and the fruit-tree area is reduced. Develop the comparison more precisely by distinguishing unchanged features from altered ones and locating the new facilities accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes. This makes the main message easy to follow, and phrases such as “while” and “Although” help connect comparisons. However, some links are awkward or unclear, particularly “The sheep area devided into two major parts” and “while at the place where barn area was converted,” which make the relationships between locations difficult to follow. The overview also groups several changes together without a clear spatial order. Organise the details by area—for example, the western fields and new visitor facilities first, then the eastern buildings—and use precise references such as “north of” or “south of” to clarify locations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of map vocabulary, including “relocated,” “introduced,” “replaced” and “remained untouched,” which helps describe change. Some choices, however, are imprecise or do not collocate naturally: “underwent through major development,” “for placing solar panels,” and “the barn area” are less suitable for describing a building and land use. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “unchangned,” “devided,” “pannels” and “farmohouse.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the general account, but they reduce accuracy and polish. Aim for concise, conventional map language and check spelling carefully, especially for key labels copied from the plan.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and a passive construction in “was converted into the holiday cottages.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors make individual sentences awkward. For example, “The sheep area devided into two major parts” needs a verb (“was divided”), while “the structure of the farm remained unchangned” does not accurately express the changes shown. In “The barn area relocated,” the passive form “was relocated” is needed, and the following clause beginning “while at the place where” is incomplete or poorly joined. Review passive forms, articles and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a complete, clearly connected structure.
