IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The first illustraton shows sketch of Beechwood Farm in 1950 and second map shows how it looks today after changes made to it.

Overall, there are more facilities today that are also well arranged as opposed to in 1950. Most striking change is the transition of road from track and addition of several other sites like camping field, a farm shop, and several solar panels are also added, as seen in top right corner of the map.

In 1950 all the area on one side of the track was dedicated to sheep, but now two parking sites on either side of the road are added, and a camping field opposite to the parking along mainroad is also introduced. Similarly, solar panels are installed in front of the other parking site.

On riveside of the farm, the barn that was alongside the track is now shifted near the area for chickens and two different roads lead there. On the other hand, locations of the farm house, chiken's area, and three different fields (fruit, vegetable, and soft fruits) are still same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main contrast between the farm in 1950 and today, and your overview notes the change from tracks to roads and the addition of visitor facilities. You also include relevant details such as the sheep area being replaced and the continued presence of the three crop fields. Some comparisons, however, are inaccurate or unclear: the barn was not moved beside the chicken area; it is now south-west of the farmhouse, while the farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain in their original positions. The claim that the fields are “still same” overlooks that the farm shop has been added between the fruit trees and soft-fruit area. Your response addresses the task, but several important changes and locations need more precise reporting to make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes and retained features. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Similarly,” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the progression within the detail paragraphs is not always easy to follow because locations are described imprecisely. For example, “two parking sites on either side of the road” and “a camping field opposite to the parking” do not clearly identify which road or parking area is meant. The final paragraph also combines the barn’s relocation with unchanged features, although the barn has not moved. Use a more systematic route through the map and clearer references to north, south, and road branches.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of map-related vocabulary, including “transition,” “dedicated,” “installed,” and “introduced,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “on one side of the track” and “in front of the other parking site.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing plans: “well arranged” is evaluative rather than a clear comparison, “transition of road from track” is awkward, and “riverside of the farm” does not accurately identify the barn’s position. Spelling errors such as “illustraton,” “riveside,” and “chiken’s” also reduce accuracy. Aim for conventional location phrases and precise terms such as “converted into,” “situated south of,” and “remains unchanged.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “On the other hand” and a relative clause in “a camping field opposite to the parking along mainroad.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening needs an article and a clearer structure (“The first illustration shows a sketch…”); “Most striking change” also needs “The.” In “the barn that was alongside the track is now shifted,” the tense and passive construction are not well controlled, and the sentence incorrectly presents a change. The final sentence’s list would be clearer with parallel phrasing and articles, for example, “the farmhouse, chicken area, and three fields remain in the same locations.” Continue checking articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries.
