IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The two plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

There are some big changes in the plans of today in terms of 1950s plan. The changes are visable like sheep field is been replaced along with barn areas.

In the left area of Beechwood farm there is a particular road connected to the whole farm. Beside the roads smalls trackes are placed connecting with the all places like fruit tress, soft fruits, vegetables, barn and farmhouse. Chickens area were placed down below from the farmhouse. In the upper side of the map big sheep field can be overlooked.

There are many differents changes in todays map in terms of 1950s map. Road are in the same place as their before but the trackes were placed by small roads. Also new parking area is allocated beside the road with a mini farm shop. The roads are connected to the areas like fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables, barn, chicken, farmhouse and lastly holiday cottages. Solar panel and new parking is seen in the upper right side of the map and sheep placed were replaced

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify that the farm has changed and mention several relevant features, including the sheep field, roads, parking, the farm shop, solar panels and holiday cottages. However, the overview is unclear: “sheep field is been replaced along with barn areas” does not accurately explain the main changes, since the barn remains and the sheep area becomes a camping field. Some details are also imprecise, such as saying the roads are “in the same place” without distinguishing the former tracks from the new road layout. To strengthen the response, clearly summarise the major changes and compare what was retained, removed and added, including the continued presence of the farmhouse, barn and agricultural plots. The response also includes 15 words copied from the task prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic structure, moving from an opening statement to a description of the earlier plan and then to changes today. This gives the reader some sense of the comparison. However, progression is limited because several sentences list locations rather than grouping related changes, and the final sentence ends abruptly with “sheep placed were replaced”. Linking phrases such as “In 1950” and “Today” help signal the time periods, but repeated wording such as “There are many differents changes” and “The roads are connected to the areas” makes the organisation feel repetitive. Use separate, clearly developed paragraphs for the overview and the two plans, and connect each comparison explicitly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “farmhouse”, “fruit trees”, “soft fruits”, “vegetables” and “parking area”, so the reader can recognise several features. However, the range is limited and some word choices or forms make the description unclear: “small tracks”, “big sheep field” and “sheep placed were replaced” are imprecise or awkward. Spelling errors such as “visable”, “tress” and “differents” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise terms for changes and locations, and avoid repeating general words such as “area” and “places”. For example, describe the sheep field as being converted into a camping field, and identify the new road and visitor facilities directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Most sentences use simple structures, and the basic meaning is sometimes recoverable, but grammatical errors are frequent and can make relationships between features difficult to follow. Examples include “sheep field is been replaced”, “Chickens area were placed” and “Road are in the same place as their before”; these show problems with verb forms, agreement and sentence construction. The response also relies heavily on fragments or loosely connected lists, such as “Solar panel and new parking is seen…”. Practise accurate past and present forms when comparing the plans, and build complete sentences with a clear subject and verb. A controlled pattern such as “The sheep field was replaced by a camping area” would improve clarity.
