IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
THE MAPS COMPARE HOW THE SITE OF BEECHWOOD FARM HAS CHANGED BETWEEN THE YEAR 1950 AND TODAY.
OVERALL, THE AREA EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT CHANGES, WITH THE MOST NOTABLE DEVELOPMENTS BEING CONSTRUCTED IN THE SHEEP YIELD AND HOW THE TRACK HAVE TRANSFORMED THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. ADDITIONALLY, NEW FACILITIES WERE ADDED, INDICATING A SHIFT TOWARD RECREATIONAL USE.
IN THE EARLIER MAP, THE LAYOUT OF THE UPPER AREA OF THE SITE WAS UNDEVELOPED WHICH MOST OF THE SHEEPS WERE SITUATED. HOWEVER, THROUGHOUT THE FIVE DECADES, THE WHOLE SHEEP YIELD WAS TRANSFORMED TO A CAMPING FIELD AND AREA FOR SOLAR PANELS. PARKING AREA WAS SITUATED NEAR THE MAIN ROAD, WHILE ANOTHER PARKING SITE WAS CONSTRUCTED AT THE END OF THE ROAD.
BY TODAY, MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS HAD TAKEN PLACE. THE BARN WAS REPLACED BY HOLIDAY COTTAGES, AND A NEW BARN WAS CONSTRUCTED AT THE END OF THE ROAD NEAR THE FARMHOUSE. ADDITIONALLY, A FARM SHOP WAS BUILT LOCATED ALONG THE FRUIT TREES NEAR THE MAIN ROAD.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You provide a relevant overview by identifying substantial change and a shift towards recreational use, and you report several accurate developments: the sheep area became a camping field and solar-panel area, parking was added, and a farm shop appeared near the fruit trees. However, coverage is uneven. The response does not describe the retained fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable plots, or the farmhouse and chicken enclosure, and the claim that the original barn was replaced by holiday cottages is inaccurate: the barn remains, while the cottages are south of the eastern road. The overview also focuses on the sheep area and tracks without clearly summarising the broader changes to the site. Include the main retained features and distinguish relocated or added buildings more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the earlier and present layouts. This makes the comparison easy to follow at a general level, and transitions such as “In the earlier map” and “By today” signal the time contrast. However, the progression is not fully controlled: the second body paragraph combines the barn, cottages, and farm shop without a consistent spatial route, while several important features are omitted. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Additionally,” and the overview’s reference to tracks is not developed later. Organise details by area or by retained versus added features, and use clearer references to connect each change to its location.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of map-related vocabulary, including “transformed,” “constructed,” “facilities,” and “recreational use,” which helps communicate the broad nature of the changes. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “sheep yield,” “the whole sheep yield,” and “the layout … was undeveloped which most of the sheeps were situated.” “Parking site” is also less natural than “parking area,” and “built located” combines two competing constructions. These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less precise, even though the reader can generally infer it. Use standard map vocabulary such as “sheep field,” “was converted into,” and “was added,” and check plural forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is some variety in sentence forms, including a participial overview (“with the most notable developments being…”) and contrastive clauses introduced by “while” and “although”-type relationships. The main ideas are usually understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “how the track have transformed” has subject–verb disagreement, and “the layout … was undeveloped which most of the sheeps were situated” lacks a clear grammatical connection between its clauses. The phrase “the barn was replaced by holiday cottages” is structurally clear but does not accurately describe the map; focus on grammar separately from that factual issue. Also review tense consistency (“By today … had taken place”), articles, and sentence boundaries to make complex descriptions more controlled.
