Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided maps illustrate the change that took place in Beachwood Farm between 1950 and the present day.

Overall, Beachwood farm underwent a dramatic change characterized by the replacement of simple farm with tourism spot, while farm house remains unchanged.

Looking at the northern east section, the sheep farm that stood in 1950 was demolished and replaced by camping field, parking area and install solar panels for the electricity production. The track was transformed into the roads, while barn is connected at the end of connection of two roads in the southern section. To the east, there is a barn earlier which was converted into holiday cottages.

In contrast, the southern west area experienced fewer alteration, the fruit tree, soft fruits and vegetable remained in its original location, though a farm shop is added adjacent to it. Farmhouse and chickens remained unchanged and stayed in the same place as earlier.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main transformation, describing the site’s shift towards tourism and noting that the farmhouse remains in place. You also compare the northern area with the less-changed south-west and identify several key additions, including the camping field, solar panels, farm shop and holiday cottages. These points address the task and are generally grounded in the plans. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the barn did not become holiday cottages; the cottages occupy the area east of the farmhouse, while the barn remains as a separate building farther south-west. The farmhouse and chickens are retained, but the barn’s position and the new road layout need clearer reporting. More precise comparisons would make the account better supported and less prone to over-generalisation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, a summary of the main change, and then descriptions of the northern/eastern and south-western areas. The contrast signalled by “In contrast” helps the reader follow the comparison, and the paragraphs have distinct purposes. Some linking and referencing could be more precise, however. For example, “the end of connection of two roads” is difficult to interpret, and “To the east” does not clearly identify which building or area is being discussed. The sequence of features in the third paragraph also makes the relationship between the former barn and the cottages confusing. Use clearer location references and organise each body paragraph around a defined area or set of changes to strengthen the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “replacement,” “transformed,” “adjacent,” and “remained in its original location.” These choices help communicate the broad development of the farm. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise, such as “tourism spot,” “sheep farm,” and “connection of two roads.” There are also word-form or spelling issues in “Beachwood” (the map says Beechwood), “farm house,” and “fewer alteration.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard map-description terms such as “tourist destination,” “sheep-grazing area,” and “road junction,” and check spelling and plural forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview clause (“while farm house remains unchanged”) and a contrastive sentence beginning “In contrast.” The main ideas are usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles are missing in phrases such as “replacement of simple farm” and “while farm house remains unchanged”; the latter also needs an article before “farmhouse.” The sentence “the sheep farm that stood in 1950 was demolished and replaced by camping field” needs clearer noun phrasing and an article before “camping field.” In “Farmhouse and chickens remained unchanged and stayed in the same place as earlier,” the plural subject does not match the singular farmhouse. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence construction, while retaining the useful variety of structures you attempt.
