IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps compare the site of Beechwood Farm in 1950 with the present time.
Overall, the track was upgraded into a road while the vegetative farms between the track and the river remained the same. However, the sheep farm was demolished to establish various features.
The fruit tress, soft fruits and vegetable farm remains untouched however, a farm shop was established near the fruit tress. A parking area was built right across the farm shop. The track was upgraded into a road connecting to the new barn below the triangular road on the southeast of the map. The chicken farm and farmhouse remained untouched on the southeast side of the map however, the old barn was converted into holiday cottages.
Furthermore, the ship farm was demolished in order to establish solar panels along with a parking space on the northeast side while a camping field was built on the north side of the barn.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main change from a track to a road and note that the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas remain, giving the response a relevant overview. You also report several new facilities, including the farm shop, camping field, solar panels and holiday cottages. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the parking is near the road junction, not “right across” the farm shop; the original barn remains a barn, while the farmhouse—not the barn—was replaced by holiday cottages. The chickens and farmhouse did not both remain unchanged. The sheep area became a camping field, and the former barn area now includes the farmhouse and cottages. More precise comparisons of these central changes would make the summary more complete and reliable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes. This helps the reader follow the broad comparison, and “Overall” and “Furthermore” signal the purpose of the sections. However, the progression within the detail paragraphs is not always clear. The sentence about the parking being “right across” the shop is difficult to interpret, and the final paragraph returns to the sheep area after discussing the eastern facilities without clearly locating the changes. Repeated use of “however” also makes connections feel mechanical, particularly where the contrast is not fully explained. Grouping the western fields and shop together, then describing the northern and eastern changes in a consistent spatial order, would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of map-related vocabulary, including “upgraded,” “established,” “demolished,” “connecting” and “remained,” which helps describe development and continuity. Some choices, however, are imprecise or incorrectly formed: “vegetative farms” is not a natural description of the labelled fields, and “chicken farm” does not accurately name the chicken enclosure. There are also spelling errors in “fruit tress” and “ship farm”; the latter appears to mean “sheep farm.” Phrases such as “right across” do not clearly express the parking area’s position. Use the map labels directly and choose precise location language, such as “beside,” “north-east of” or “south of,” to make the comparisons clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple statements and more complex clauses, for example, “while the vegetative farms … remained the same” and “in order to establish solar panels.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce accuracy. In “The fruit tress, soft fruits and vegetable farm remains untouched,” the plural list requires “remain,” and the items should be presented consistently. The sentence beginning “The chicken farm and farmhouse remained untouched … however” needs clearer punctuation or a linking structure; a comma before “however” is not sufficient to join the clauses. There is also inconsistent tense control between past descriptions and “the present time.” Keep past tense for changes and use present tense only for the current layout, checking agreement and sentence boundaries.
