Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram displays below shows two sites of farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Overall, there is dramatically change in the beechwood farm from 1950 till today. The solar panels, parking, holiday cottages, farmhouse, barn, farm shop and parking is added in beechwood farm today as compared with 1950. However, new roads are also build recently and tracks are eliminated and over all beechwood farm became crowded.

The one of the major change is tracks are eliminated and new roads are built and the barn is also added recently at beechwood farm. In 1950 there was a huge space for the Sheep which is eliminated today and solar panels, parking and camping fields are added today. Moreover, fruit tress , soft fruits and vegetables are the same from 1950 to recently as there is no change.

Generally, holiday cottages are added recently and the location of barn is changed today as it is attached with the two roads.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad change from a farm with tracks and sheep to a more developed site, and you mention several new facilities, including parking, solar panels, cottages and a camping field. However, the account is only partly accurate and developed. The barn was already present in 1950, so saying it was “added” is incorrect; it has moved. The farmhouse and chickens also remain, rather than being new additions. Your claim that the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables are unchanged overlooks the farm shop and the altered arrangement of the site. Give a clearer overview of what remains, what is replaced or relocated, and describe the main changes in position more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs, so there is a basic attempt to organise the comparison. The ideas are generally relevant, and phrases such as “However” and “Moreover” signal relationships. However, progression is limited: the overview lists additions, while the following paragraphs repeat roads, tracks, sheep and new facilities without a clear spatial or thematic order. “Generally” introduces a final point that feels disconnected from the preceding paragraph, and “the one of the major change” makes the relationship between ideas harder to follow. Group changes by area or by what was retained, removed and added, and use clearer references to connect each comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “solar panels,” “holiday cottages,” “camping fields” and “eliminated,” which helps communicate the main types of change. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing plans. “Crowded” is an imprecise summary of a site that has gained facilities, while “attached with the two roads” does not clearly describe the barn’s position. There are also spelling and word-form errors, such as “fruit tress” and “build” where the past participle is needed. Aim for precise map language such as “relocated,” “replaced,” “retained,” “to the north of” and “alongside,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “However” and a clause beginning “as compared with 1950.” Nevertheless, errors are frequent, and some sentence structures are faulty. For example, “there is dramatically change” has incorrect verb and adjective forms, while “the solar panels … and parking is added” has subject–verb agreement problems. “The one of the major change is tracks are eliminated” is also difficult to parse, and tense use shifts between “are build,” “was” and “became.” Practise forming accurate past and present passive constructions for map changes, and check articles, plurals and agreement. Shorter, controlled sentences would make the comparisons clearer.
