IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps compare the site of farm in 1950 with its current site.
Overall, the farm has undergone in significant development with many features being changed or replaced. The track has been converted into road with the inclusion of farm shop, parking areas, camping field, solar panels and holiday cottages.
In 1950, the farm had the fields for fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables beside each other. The track was dividing the fields from sheep area. On the right most side of map, the barn was located. Farmhouse and area for chickens were also located on the right side of map, beneath the barn. The river was flowing from fields and chickens area.
Today, the farm shop has been introduced in fruit trees field. The track has been upgraded to road. The sheep area has been divided into camping field and solar panels. It is the significant development. Additionally, two parking areas has been developed. One is located near farm shop and camping field while second is located near solar panels area. Barn has been converted into hoilday cottages, whereas new barn is located at the junction of road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You provide a clear overview of substantial change, noting the road and the addition of facilities such as the shop, parking, camping and solar panels. You also compare the original and current uses of the site, and most locations are reported in a way that matches the plans. This meets the task well, though some details are less fully covered: for example, the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable plots largely remain, and the farmhouse and chicken enclosure are still present. The statement that the river was “flowing from fields and chickens area” is unclear and does not accurately describe its position. To strengthen the response further, distinguish more clearly between retained features and changed ones, and describe the new layout with precise directional relationships.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a sensible four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the two periods. This gives the reader a generally coherent progression from the earlier plan to the present one. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Additionally,” and “whereas” help signal the relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear, particularly “It is the significant development,” whose reference is uncertain, and the river sentence does not fit smoothly with the preceding location details. The repeated use of “located” also makes the description feel list-like. Improve cohesion by grouping features by area and using clear references, such as “the former sheep field” or “the eastern section,” to show how the layout has changed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “fields,” “junction,” “parking areas,” “camping field,” and “converted,” so the main changes are understandable. There is also some useful variety in expressions such as “introduced” and “upgraded.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “the site of farm,” “development with many features being changed,” and “river was flowing from fields” do not express the intended relationships clearly. “Hoilday” is misspelled, and “right most side” is an awkward form. Aim for more precise location language and natural collocations, such as “on the eastern side” and “the river runs along the southern boundary.” This would make the description more fluent and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple statements and some more complex forms, including the contrast in “Barn has been converted into holiday cottages, whereas new barn is located at the junction of road.” Most sentences communicate the intended information, but some grammatical errors remain. Articles are often missing, as in “site of farm,” “converted into road,” and “near farm shop”; agreement is incorrect in “two parking areas has been developed”; and the past description shifts awkwardly into “The river was flowing.” There are also problems with sentence construction in “The track was dividing the fields from sheep area.” Practise consistent article use, plural agreement, and accurate past-versus-present forms. These corrections would improve control while retaining your range of sentence structures.
