IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps compare the site of a farm in 1950 with the current site.

Overall, the farm has undergone significant development with many different features being changed or replaced. A camping field, the farm shop, the parking areas, the holiday cottages and the solar panels are introduced in the farm, whereas the track has been upgraded to the road.

In 1950, the farm had the fields for the fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables. Substantially, the river flowed from these fields. This river also flowed from the chickens area. Moreover, the track placed between fields, chickens area, farmhouse, barn and sheep area.

Today, the farm shop has included in fruit trees area. The track has been upgraded to the road. The sheep area has been divided into a camping field and the solar panels area. The new parkings introduced, one is located near farm shop and the other is located near solar panels area while both of these are connected with road. Significantly, Barn has been replaced by holiday cottages, whereas new barn has been developed. Since, new barn has been connected with the road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You provide a relevant comparison and a clear overview of substantial change, identifying new facilities and the conversion of the track into a road. Several key changes are also reported, including the camping field, shop, parking and cottages. This meets the task well, but some details are inaccurate or unclear: the parking areas are not described as being near the shop and solar panels; one is near the main-road junction and the other beside the eastbound road. The barn was not replaced by cottages: the original barn remains, while the cottages occupy a different area and a barn is shown near the southern road junction. The river description is also confusing, and the farmhouse and chickens area are not compared clearly. More precise locations and a fuller account of what remained would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to descriptions of 1950 and today. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement. However, progression within the detail paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because locations are listed without a consistent route around the maps. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “whereas” and “Since” are used, but some connections are mechanical or unclear; for example, “Since, new barn has been connected with the road” does not form a complete, well-linked idea. Organise each map description by area or route, and use clear references to show how features relate spatially. This would make the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing change and location, including “undergone significant development,” “replaced,” “divided” and “connected.” These choices help communicate the main idea. Some less natural word choices and collocations reduce precision, however: “the river flowed from these fields,” “the track placed between” and “new parkings introduced” do not express the intended map relationships naturally. “The farm shop has included in fruit trees area” is also unclear. Use standard map-description phrases such as “lies beside,” “is located within,” “was converted into” and “was added.” Greater precision in naming the road branches and the positions of facilities would also help the reader distinguish the changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a relative clause in “which are connected with road.” The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “the farm shop has included in fruit trees area” needs a passive construction, while “the track placed between” is missing a finite verb. Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “the road,” “new barn” and “the new parkings.” The sentence beginning “Since” is incomplete, and the comma after “Since” is misplaced. Practise accurate passive forms and complete clauses, while checking articles and singular/plural forms in each sentence.
