IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The supplied map enumerates the comparison of farm location among 1950 and present day.
Overall, the Farm has gotten a lot of change in these years between. Previously, i had no parking but today it has 2 parkings on both edges. The track has been converted into roads all over. The sheep has been transformed into 2 parts. One is Camping field and the other is having Solar panels.
In 1950, the farm was simple and spacious. Every part had it's own wider space. Fruit trees were infront of road when u entered. Right next to it were soft fruits and further were vegetables. Then the chicken Farmhouse comes. So there were no parking facility.
While on the other hand, now parking has been included on both edges. There is Camping filed and Solar panels. The track has been converted into a raod. Barn has been included now. So there are noticable changes in it today.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad change from a sheep area to camping and solar panels, and note the addition of two parking areas and roads. These are relevant comparisons. However, the account only partially covers the plans: it misses important changes such as the farm shop and holiday cottages, and incorrectly says the barn “has been included now,” although a barn is shown in 1950 as well. The description of the earlier layout is also unclear: the farmhouse and chicken enclosure are not accurately located in the sequence “Then the chicken Farmhouse comes.” The overview mentions change but does not clearly summarise the main pattern, including which features remained. Select the most significant changes and describe them accurately, with clear comparisons between the two dates.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an overview to details about 1950 and then today. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “While on the other hand” attempt to signal relationships. However, progression is limited: the same changes—parking, camping, solar panels and roads—are repeated in the overview and final paragraph, while the descriptions do not follow a consistent spatial order. “Then the chicken Farmhouse comes” also makes the relationship between features difficult to follow. Use one paragraph for the overview and organise the details by area or by features that changed and remained. Avoid repeating points, and use linking expressions only where they clarify a genuine contrast or sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “parking,” “Camping field,” “Solar panels,” “track” and “Farmhouse,” so the reader can identify several features. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the comparison of farm location,” “2 parkings,” and “the sheep has been transformed into 2 parts.” “The farm has gotten a lot of change” is also an imprecise way to describe redevelopment. Spelling errors such as “filed,” “raod” and “noticable” further reduce control. Aim for precise terms for land use and change, and check spelling. For example, describe the sheep area as having been redeveloped for camping and solar panels, rather than saying the sheep itself was transformed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate several basic points using simple sentences, for example, “There is Camping filed and Solar panels.” However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and attempts to combine ideas are often faulty. Examples include “The supplied map enumerates the comparison of farm location among 1950 and present day,” where the comparison structure and time reference are not controlled, and “The sheep has been transformed,” which has an agreement problem. Other issues include “the Farm has gotten a lot of change” and the fragment-like sequence “Then the chicken Farmhouse comes.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent. Practise accurate past-versus-present forms and build clear comparison sentences, such as “In 1950, the site had a sheep field, whereas today this area contains a camping field and solar panels.”
