Student answer (Band 5.5)

The map depicts some changes in the site of a Beechwood farm in 1950 and same site today.

There are many significant changes in the farm over the time. but the most advance fluctutation is the addition of solar panels to manage all the circumstances related to electricity and track is also replaced by the road but situated in the same point.

In 1950, there was sheep area at the top right corner. The track situated almost in the middle of Beechwood farm and below this, fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables areas existed along the river side at west corner whereas, barn, chickens and farmhouse showed in the direction of east among the track and river.

In 2nd map, track are replace by road located at the same place today and above this, sheep side are completely transformed. Now, there is camping field and parking places are available on both sides of camping place and solar panels are fixed at the the north east of farm. when we see the opposite side of road. There is addition of only one farm shop while others remain same. Barn is transmitted in to center which is linked with road having triangular shape with two paths in opposite directions. In the south east corner, barn is transformed in to the Holiday cottages. River is flooded besides all as in 1950.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the maps as a comparison between 1950 and today and mention several important changes, including the solar panels, the new road, camping field, farm shop and holiday cottages. However, the overview is not sufficiently clear or accurate: the claim that the track is replaced by a road “at the same point” misses that the internal route is now a road and the site has also gained new facilities. Some locations and changes are misreported. For example, the sheep area is not at the “top right” in 1950, and the barn has not become holiday cottages; the cottages are a new feature, while the barn remains. The response also says most features “remain same” without specifying them. A clearer overview and more precise comparisons would strengthen coverage of the main features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is divided into an introduction, a general statement and paragraphs about each map, so the reader can broadly follow the time sequence. You also use basic linking expressions such as “In 1950,” “In 2nd map,” and “whereas.” However, progression within the paragraphs is uneven: several locations are listed in long sentences, and the final paragraph shifts abruptly from the farm shop to the barn, cottages and river. Phrases such as “when we see the opposite side of road” do not clearly identify which area is being described, while “others remain same” leaves the reference vague. Organise the comparison by site area or by features that changed and stayed, and use clearer references to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “solar panels,” “camping field,” “river side,” and “north east,” which helps convey the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear. “The most advance fluctutation” does not express the main change, and “Barn is transmitted in to the center” is not an appropriate way to describe its position. “River is flooded besides all” also gives an inaccurate impression rather than saying that the river continues along the boundary. There are spelling and word-form problems, including “fluctutation” and “replace.” Aim for precise location and change vocabulary, such as “situated,” “remained,” “was converted into,” and “along the southern boundary.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with clauses, for example, “There are many significant changes…” and the sentence beginning “In 1950… whereas…”. However, the longer structures are often difficult to control, and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships unclear. Examples include “track are replace by road,” “sheep side are completely transformed,” and “Barn is transmitted in to the Holiday cottages,” where verb forms, agreement and articles are problematic. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: “over the time. but” incorrectly separates and punctuates the thought, and the final paragraph contains several run-on ideas. Practise accurate past and present forms, singular/plural agreement, and shorter sentences before combining details with conjunctions.
