IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

THE GIVEN PLANS ILLUSTRATE THE MAIN STRUCTURE OF BEECHWOOD FARM IN THE YEAR 1950 AND THE SAME FARM SITE NOW AFTER SOME DEVELOPMENTS.

OVERALL,THE SITE BECOMES MORE DEVELOPED AND MODERN. SOLAR PANEL ARE INSTALLED IN THE FARMLAND. MOREOVER, MORE FACILITIES ARE INTRODUCED IN THE SITE. HOWEVER, THE RIVER AND ROAD REMAIN UNCHANGED.

BEFORE TRANSFORMATION, THERE WERE DIFFERENT TRACKS. FURTHERMORE, LARGE AREA WAS DEVOTED FOR SHEEPS. VARIOUS NUMBERS OF FRUIT TREES AND VEGETABLE WERE PLANTED ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE FARM. CHICKENS WERE ON THE SOUTH EAST SIDE OF THE SITE. MAIN ROAD WAS ON THE WEST SIDE AND RIVER ON THE SOUTH SIDE ALONG THE FARM.

AFTER DEVELOPMENTS, SOLAR PANELS ARE INSTALLED NOW ON THE NORTH EAST ALONGSIDE WITH PARKING. ADDITIONALLY, CERTAIN TRACKS ARE REPLACED WITH ROADS. CAMPING FIELD IS ALSO MADE IN THE NORTH. THE LOCATION OF BARN IS CHANGED FROM EAST SIDE TO SOUTH AND ITS PLACE IS ALLOCATED FOR MAKING HOLIDAY COTTAGES. WHILE TREES AND RIVER REMAINED UNFLUCTUATED.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall change: the farm has become more developed, with new facilities, while the river and some agricultural features remain. You also report several relevant changes, including the camping field, solar panels, roads and holiday cottages. This gives the response a clear basis and covers the main comparison. However, some details are inaccurate or too general: the barn is not relocated from the east to the south; the original barn is replaced by cottages, while a barn remains in a different position near the southern road junction. The farmhouse and chickens also remain in broadly the same area, but this is not clearly compared. More precise descriptions of the changed layout and retained features would make the account more complete and better supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs comparing the earlier and current plans. This creates a clear chronological progression, and linking expressions such as “Before transformation” and “After developments” help the reader follow the comparison. The overview also gives the account a useful central focus. Some connections are less smooth, however: “While trees and river remained unfluctuated” is an incomplete contrast, and the final paragraph moves quickly between several features without grouping them by location or type. A few transitions, including “Furthermore” and “Additionally,” feel mechanical. Grouping the new facilities together and then describing retained or relocated features would make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing changes and locations, including “developed,” “facilities,” “replaced,” “allocated” and “alongside.” These choices help communicate the broad transformation, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “main structure,” “various numbers of,” “unfluctuated” and “solar panel are installed.” “Sheeps” is also an incorrect plural form, while “on the west side” is repeated rather than varied with more precise location language. Aim for standard map-description phrases such as “the layout,” “a large area,” “remained unchanged” and “was converted into.” More accurate collocations would improve precision without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple statements and more complex forms, including the contrast introduced by “However” and the clause beginning “While.” Most of the intended comparisons can be understood, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Solar panel are installed” has a number-agreement error, and “large area was devoted” needs an article. The sentence “While trees and river remained unfluctuated” is not a complete independent sentence, and tense use shifts between past and present in “were planted” and “are installed now.” There are also punctuation and spacing issues, such as missing spaces after commas and full stops. Check articles, plural agreement, tense consistency and sentence completeness when revising.
