Student answer (Band 6.0)

The plans show us the site of a farm in 1950 and the same farm today.

Overall the farm has undergone significant changes transforming an agriculture site into more developed site with facilities for visitors.

In 1950 the site consisted of more agricultural land. It can be seen on the northern part there was an area for sheep's and on its western side besides the track there was a whole land for fruit trees, soft fruits and in lower part the vegetables are grown there. In addition on the south eastern side besides the river a barn and a farmhouse was built there along with a area consisting of chickens.

On the other hand as of today many advancements have been made on the same land. Now the area which was for sheep's has now been replaced camping field which now also consists of solar panels and small area for parking in both corners. At the western side fruits and vegetables still remain the same only addition that has been made is a farm shop. As we go south the barns size has now reduced and farmhouse stands still with the addition of holiday cottages along side the road which used to be a track.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main transformation from an agricultural site to one with visitor facilities, and you compare several key features, including the former sheep area becoming a camping field and the addition of a farm shop and holiday cottages. The account of the 1950 layout is generally relevant, but some details are unclear or inaccurate: the barn and farmhouse are described as being on the south-eastern side beside the river, whereas they are in the eastern part of the site, and the barn’s size is not shown as reduced. The overview is useful but could be more precise about what remained and what changed. To strengthen the response, report the new road and parking arrangements and explain more clearly that the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas largely remain.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two time periods. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “In 1950” and “On the other hand” signal the shift between plans. However, the progression within the paragraphs is sometimes awkward, and several references are imprecise. For example, “on its western side” and “as we go south” do not clearly identify the features being discussed. The final sentence combines the barn, farmhouse, cottages and former track in a way that makes their locations difficult to follow. Use clearer location-based sequencing and link each comparison directly to its corresponding feature.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing change and location, including “undergone significant changes,” “replaced,” “addition,” and “alongside.” These choices communicate the broad development of the farm. However, some word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “more developed site,” “a whole land,” and “many advancements have been made on the same land.” Repetition of general terms such as “area” and “side” also limits precision. Choose vocabulary that describes map features directly—for example, “agricultural land,” “plot,” “north-east,” and “converted into”—and avoid wording that suggests progress or improvement when the plan only shows a change in land use.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “which” and “as,” and the main meaning is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, plurals and sentence construction. For example, “an agriculture site” needs a more suitable noun form and article, while “an area consisting of chickens” has an awkward structure. In “the area which was for sheep’s has now been replaced camping field,” the possessive form, article and verb pattern are all problematic. There are also tense and agreement issues in “a barn and a farmhouse was built.” Review article use and subject–verb agreement, and make sure each passive construction includes the required preposition, as in “was replaced by.”
