IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates the difference between the site of farm in 1950 and the similar site today.
After analyzing the diagram it is clearly seen that Beechwood farm in 1950 was well estabilished. As the road was well constructed that pointed towards the north direction which remains similar today. Moreover, the place for fruit trees, soft fruits and the vegetables are as it is but a little farm shop is newly constructed near fruit trees. Additionally, the track has been converted to road and parking area is newly opened in the corner of that road.
Moving towards the north direction the camping filed and solar panels along with attached parking slot took a place of sheep. In the south , Barn rebuilt near the area for vegetables and a holiday cottages has been constructed at the old place of Barn.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several relevant changes, including the farm shop, the conversion of tracks to roads, and the arrival of camping facilities and solar panels. However, the response only partially covers the plans and lacks a clear overview of the main transformation. Some details are inaccurate: the barn is not rebuilt near the vegetables; it remains in the southern area, while the holiday cottages occupy the area south of the eastern road. The farmhouse and chicken enclosure also remain in broadly similar positions, a useful comparison you could include. The response is 140 words, below the required 150, so there is limited space to explain the changes fully. Add a concise overview and describe the key developments more accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the plans, describes some changes, and then moves to the northern area. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Additionally,” and “Moving towards” help signal progression. However, the organisation is not consistently clear: the second paragraph shifts between directions and features without a reliable spatial order, and “Moving towards the north direction” does not clearly connect to the camping field and solar panels. The comparison between the old and new layouts would be easier to follow if you grouped information by area or by what changed and what remained. Use clearer paragraphing and references, and avoid relying on a series of similar additive linkers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “converted to road,” “parking area,” “camping field,” and “solar panels,” so the reader can understand the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “the similar site,” “a little farm shop,” and “took a place of sheep.” “Attached parking slot” is also unclear for describing the parking area. Spelling errors such as “estabilished” and “filed” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise terms for locations and changes, for example, “the same site,” “a small farm shop,” and “replaced the sheep pasture.” Check spelling and choose natural collocations when describing map features.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the clause beginning “As the road was well constructed” and the sentence describing the farm shop. However, control is uneven, and some sentence structures make relationships between features difficult to follow. For example, “the place for fruit trees, soft fruits and the vegetables are as it is” has problems with agreement and sentence construction, while “a holiday cottages has been constructed” has a mismatch between the article, noun number, and verb. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “site of farm” and “in the corner of that road.” Use shorter, complete sentences when needed, and check subject–verb agreement, singular/plural forms, and articles.
