Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two plans illustrate the difference between a site of farm in 1950 and at present.
Overall, bechwood farm has changed a lot since 1950 till now where diagrams shows the addition of several new facilities like shops, parking, camping area and solar panels to provide electricity.
In 1950, the bechwood farm had a sheep area surrounded by a track and a road from the west, between the track and the river which is in south of the farm there are fruit street, soft fruit, vegetables and an area for chicken with a farm house and a barn arranged from west to

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation: the former sheep area has been developed for new uses, including parking, camping and solar panels, while the farm has gained a shop and holiday cottages. You also note that the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas remain, which is an important comparison. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers both plans. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate: the 1950 layout is not described as buildings “arranged from west to east,” and the barn is not simply relocated closer to the farmhouse and chickens; today it is positioned to their south-west. The overview could also distinguish more clearly between retained agricultural areas and new visitor facilities. More precise descriptions of these changes would strengthen an otherwise relevant account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and separate descriptions of the two time periods. This helps the reader follow the broad comparison. However, the final paragraph contains several changes in one long sentence, joined mainly by “and,” “also” and “however.” As a result, the relationships between the replacement of the sheep area, the new road, the barn and the cottages are not always clear. Some referencing is also difficult to follow, particularly “where it been replaced” and “which remaind they added.” Use shorter sentences and group information by location or by what changed versus what stayed the same. Clearer linking phrases would make the progression less mechanical and improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “track,” “river,” “parking,” “camping area” and “solar panels,” and you attempt to describe change with phrases such as “replaced” and “relocated.” This is enough to communicate the general subject, but word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make details harder to interpret. Examples include “fruit street” for the fruit trees, “bechwood” for the farm’s name, and “seperated” and “persent.” Some phrases are also imprecise, such as “changed a lot” and “provide electricity”; the latter adds an explanation not shown on the plans. Aim for accurate map labels and more precise change vocabulary, such as “remained unchanged,” “was converted into” and “was added.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences to compare the plans, but control of sentence structure is uneven. Several complex sentences become difficult to follow, as in “between the track and the river which is in south of the farm there are…” and the final sentence beginning “At persent.” Verb forms and agreement also need attention: “diagrams shows,” “where it been replaced” and “which remaind they added” are not correctly formed. Articles and prepositions are sometimes missing or awkward, as in “a site of farm” and “in south of the farm.” These errors can obscure relationships between features. Build accuracy first with clear past and present forms, then connect two related ideas in a sentence using a controlled clause structure.
