IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps we have illustrates how a site of a farm changed from the year 1950 compared to this date.
Overall, the farm underwent a significant changes over the period, for example, they replaced the sheep area with a parking spots and camping feilds and solar panels. However some locations remained unchanged.
In 1950, the beechwood farm had a track which was later changed into a road, the barn was demolished and turned into holiday cottages, a new barn was constructed between the vegetables area and the chickens area.
The other side of the farm also went into a some significant changes, in the 1950 it was occupied by sheeps, than they built several branches like a camping feild in the middle and two parkings, in addition solar panels was added in the top right of the farm, by contrast the river stayed in it’s original position with no changes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main transformation from a farm to a site with new visitor facilities, and your overview notes that some features remained unchanged. You also mention the river’s unchanged position and the addition of parking, camping and solar panels. However, several details are inaccurate or unclear: the 1950 barn was not demolished; it remains on the plan, while the new holiday cottages are south of the eastern road. The new barn is south-west of the farmhouse, not between the vegetable area and chickens. The response also overlooks important retained features, including the farmhouse, chickens and crop plots, and does not clearly describe the changes to the original track system. More precise comparisons and a fuller account of what stayed and what changed would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview and details about the site. The contrast signalled by “However” and “by contrast” helps show that some features changed while the river remained. However, the progression between locations is not always clear. The paragraph beginning “In 1950” mixes past and present changes, while “The other side of the farm” does not clearly identify which area is being discussed. The sequence “they built several branches like a camping field” also connects unlike features, making the relationship difficult to follow. Organise the details by area or by change, and use clearer references such as “in the north-east” and “in the southern section” to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing maps, including “underwent,” “replaced,” “constructed,” “occupied” and “original position.” These choices help communicate the broad changes. However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise, such as “built several branches like a camping field,” where “branches” does not describe facilities or land use. There are also spelling errors in “feilds” and “sheeps,” and “parking spots” is less suitable than a more formal map-description term. Aim for precise labels and natural collocations, especially when describing roads, buildings and land uses. This would make the account clearer and more appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a comparison introduced by “However” and a longer sentence beginning “The other side of the farm also went into…”. The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In the opening, “The two maps … illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “underwent a significant changes” has an article and number problem. Tense and sentence construction are also uneven in “in the 1950 it was occupied by sheeps, than they built…”. Review agreement, articles and plural forms, and use past tense consistently for the 1950 plan and present tense for today. Breaking the longest sentence into clearer clauses would also improve control.
