IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagrams compare difference in the Beechwood farm in 1950 and today.
Overall, the Beechwood farm is significantly developed with the time. New shops, a camping field and transportation facilities are developed today compared to 1950.
The track from 1950 modified into a road today, while all the facilities and resources saturated each side of road. Area of fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables grew in 1950 remained same in today. However, a farm house and a parking area were constructed in sides of road in the upper coner of farm. The sheep area is changed to camping feild and solar panels in today. The camping feild is located in the north, while solar panels are built in the northeast in today.
There are newly introduced holiday cottages in the east and farm house and chickens are remained the same place in the southeast. The road is divided trangular shape in the middle and it ended to barn in today

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main transformation from a track to a road and note several new features, including the camping field, solar panels and holiday cottages. The overview also recognises that the farm has been developed, and you compare the two time periods. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the farmhouse and chickens were already present in 1950, so saying they “are remained the same place” needs clearer comparison, and the farmhouse was not newly constructed beside the road. The fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas broadly remain, but their locations and relationships to the river and road could be described more precisely. Develop the overview around the major changes and distinguish retained features from additions or relocations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs of details. This helps the reader follow the comparison, and words such as “Overall,” “while” and “However” signal relationships between ideas. However, progression within the detail paragraphs is not always clear. For example, the sentence about the farmhouse and parking area is followed by the sheep area becoming a camping field and solar panels, without a consistent route around the plan. Some references are also difficult to follow, such as “in sides of road” and “it ended to barn.” Organise the description by location or by retained and new features, and use clearer references to the road and buildings.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “track,” “road,” “fruit trees,” “camping field” and “solar panels,” and you attempt more specific terms such as “northeast” and “triangular.” This gives the response a suitable basic range for the task. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “facilities and resources saturated each side of road,” “developed with the time” and “divided trangular shape.” Spelling errors such as “coner” and “feild” also reduce precision. Choose straightforward, accurate expressions for spatial relationships and changes, such as “located on either side of the road” or “the track was replaced by a road.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple statements and more complex comparisons, for example, “The track from 1950 modified into a road today, while…” This shows an effort to connect changes, but the sentence lacks a passive verb form and its second clause is difficult to interpret. Errors in tense, articles and sentence construction occur in several places: “compare difference in the Beechwood farm,” “a farm house and a parking area were constructed in sides of road,” and “farm house and chickens are remained.” These sometimes make relationships unclear. Practise using consistent past-to-present comparisons, especially passive forms such as “was replaced” and “were added,” and check articles and prepositions when describing locations.
