IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
These pictures illustrates the information about Beechwood farm in two different times in1950 and in current situation.
On one hand, there are many things that are at same location at present and in 1950, such as river and main road with same patteren. Further more, many other things that are at same location but changed their outlook. For example, farm ouse and chicken were under the barren land but currently are under holiday cottages also furit trees are beside farm shop.
On the other hand, there are many changes take place such as the area for sheep now changed with two distinct parking at each end of the road at same side, also camping field and solar panels are made at that place. With further explanation, the location of barn changed and now besides farm house. There are two things that are added to it farm shop and holiday cottages.
Overall, the current map is complicated than previous one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify that the maps show Beechwood Farm in 1950 and today, and you note several relevant changes, including the addition of a farm shop, holiday cottages, camping and solar panels. However, the account only partially covers the main features and some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. For example, the farmhouse and chickens remain in the same general area; they are not “under holiday cottages.” The barn has moved to the south-west of the farmhouse, rather than being “besides” it. The overview that the present map is “complicated” does not clearly summarise the main transformation. To strengthen the response, describe the major land-use changes accurately and contrast them with features that remain, such as the river and agricultural plots.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has an overall structure, moving from an introduction to comparisons and then a concluding overview. The contrast markers “On one hand” and “On the other hand” help signal a change in focus, and the reader can follow the broad distinction between retained features and new developments. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the first comparison combines the river, road, farmhouse, chickens and fruit trees without a clear sequence. Phrases such as “With further explanation” do not clearly show how the next point relates to the previous one, and “it” in “added to it” has an unclear reference. Organise details by location or by what stayed versus what changed, and use linking phrases that express those relationships precisely.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “location,” “road,” “parking,” “camping field,” “solar panels” and “holiday cottages,” so the reader can identify several features. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations make the description unclear. “Changed their outlook” is not a natural way to describe changes to buildings or land use, while “under the barren land” does not convey the intended spatial relationship. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “patteren,” “furit” and “farm ouse.” Aim for precise terms such as “remained in the same position,” “was replaced by,” and “to the south of,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the comparisons more accurate and easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including comparisons introduced by “such as” and “For example.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between features difficult to understand. For instance, “These pictures illustrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “in two different times in1950 and in current situation” has problems with article use and sentence construction. In “there are many changes take place,” the verb pattern is incorrect; use “many changes have taken place.” The sentence beginning “For example” also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Practise accurate past and present forms, agreement, articles and complete sentence patterns, then proofread longer sentences for clarity.
