IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The image illustrates the changes of Beechwood farm site from 1950 to today.
Overall, the site undergo with many changes for example sheep area has been changed substantially as compare to the 1950. Barn has been reallocated to new location and some new landmarks has been introduced like farm shop, parking, camping field and cottages.
In the 1950's site plan, fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables field areas are situated across the river while on the north-east side of the plan there is a huge land for sheep. On the East side barn is located and farmhouse is just adjacent to it. Chickens are located at the south-east side of the plan at the bank of the river.
In the today's plan, farm shop has been added inside the fruit trees area and just opposite to it there is a parking area. Barn location has been updated to the south side of plan just between vegetables fields and farmhouse. While the previous barn location is now replaced with holidays cottages and opposite to these cottages another parking area is added. Sheep area has been split into two parts one for the camping field and other for the solar panels.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation: the sheep area gives way to new uses, the barn moves, and facilities such as a farm shop, parking, camping and cottages appear. These are relevant comparisons, and the overview gives the reader a clear sense that the site has changed substantially. Some details, however, are inaccurate or unclear: in 1950 the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable plots are between the track and river, not “across the river”; the farmhouse is south of the barn rather than adjacent to it; and the new farm shop is beside the fruit-tree area, not inside it. The account also omits the solar panels’ precise position and the retention of the farmhouse and chicken enclosure. More precise spatial descriptions and fuller coverage would strengthen an otherwise relevant summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and separate descriptions of the two plans. The progression from the 1950 layout to today is easy to follow, and phrases such as “In the 1950’s site plan” and “In the today’s plan” help signal the comparison. The overview also prepares the reader for the details that follow. Some links between ideas are less smooth: “While the previous barn location…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence, and “opposite to these cottages” does not make the location of the second parking area clear. Grouping the changes by area, and using clearer references such as “the former barn site,” would make the progression more precise and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “reallocated,” “landmarks,” “split into two parts” and “replaced,” and the main changes remain understandable. There are also attempts at more specific location language, such as “north-east side” and “at the bank of the river.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “huge land for sheep,” “farmhouse is just adjacent to it,” and “opposite to it” do not describe the plan precisely. “Changes of … site” is also less natural than “changes to the site.” Aim for concise, conventional map language—such as “area,” “located south of,” and “beside”—and distinguish carefully between a feature being within an area and being next to it.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence and the contrast introduced by “While.” Most of the intended meaning can be followed, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the site undergo with many changes” has an incorrect verb form, while “some new landmarks has been introduced” has subject–verb disagreement. Articles and noun forms are also inconsistent in “in the today’s plan” and “vegetables fields.” The sentence beginning “While the previous barn location…” is incomplete, and the opening sentence would be more accurate as “The image illustrates changes to the Beechwood Farm site.” Practise checking verb agreement, tense, articles and sentence completeness, while retaining your attempts to combine related comparisons.
