IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two pictures illustrate the development of Beechwood Farm from time period of 1950 and today. Overall, there is a lot of progress in today's farm from the 1950's farm. There is a lot of construction work done including many new projects but, now there is no area specifically for the sheep’s which is removed.
The land which was for the sheep’s is now being transformed into many new sites like there is area for parking close to the road. next to it there are camping fields and in the direction of north-east there are now solar panels and one more place for parking.
The area of fruit trees is as it was but there is a new farm shop there now on the edge of the road. The area of soft fruits and vegetables did not change over time. The last area place for chickens and farmhouse is constant while previous barn is transformed into holiday cottages and new small place for the barn which is built at the end where both roads connect near the area of vegetables and farmhouse in the direction of south.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main transformation clearly: the former sheep area has been redeveloped, while the fruit-growing and poultry areas largely remain. You also report several key additions, including parking, camping, solar panels, a farm shop and holiday cottages, and note the change from the original barn to cottages. These comparisons address the task and give the reader a sound overall picture. Some details, however, are imprecise: the new barn is described as being near the vegetables and farmhouse, although it is south-west of the farmhouse at the road junction, and the first parking area is not simply “close to the road.” The overview could also summarise the broader shift from farming towards visitor facilities more explicitly. More precise location descriptions would strengthen an otherwise relevant account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable progression: an opening overview is followed by descriptions of the former sheep area, the crop plots and the buildings. This helps the reader follow the main changes, and phrases such as “The area of fruit trees” signal a shift in focus. However, the paragraphing is limited, and several ideas are crowded into long sentences, especially the final sentence about the farmhouse, cottages and barn. Linking is sometimes mechanical or unclear: “next to it” does not make the parking and camping locations precise, while “The last area place” makes the reference difficult to follow. Organise the details into clearer groups—western fields and new facilities, then eastern buildings—and use explicit location references to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “transformed,” “solar panels,” “holiday cottages,” and “area for the chickens,” so the reader can understand many of the changes. However, the range is not consistently precise or natural. Phrases such as “a lot of progress,” “many new projects,” and “new small place for the barn” are vague, while “area place” and “camping fields” are awkward choices for describing the plan. Repetition of “area” and “place” also limits flexibility. Aim for concise, map-specific terms such as “redeveloped,” “facility,” “plot,” and “site,” and use accurate collocations—for example, “a camping field” and “a new barn was built.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including “The area of fruit trees is as it was but there is a new farm shop there now,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, tense and sentence construction. For example, “from time period of 1950 and today” needs a more accurate time expression, and “there is a lot of construction work done” is an awkward passive construction. The sentence beginning “The last area place for chickens” is also structurally unclear, and the final sentence joins several changes without clear grammatical control. Practise describing past-to-present changes with consistent present and past forms, and divide complex descriptions into shorter, complete sentences with clear subjects.
