IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the site of the Beechwood farm, how it looked like in 1950 and how it looks today.
Overall, it is evident that farm has been developed a lot over the period. The most noticeable transformation is the construction of camping field and the removal of sheep area.
Looking at the details, there were few things in 1950. For example, Fruit trees, soft fruit area, vegetables space. Also there was a separate area for chicken behind the farmhouse and there was a barn house near the track. The largest area of farm is occupied by sheeps and the river was flowing around the farmland.
In contrast, sheep area is replaced by camping field, solar panels and parking on both side of the camping field. Track has also replaced from road. Old barn is replaced by holiday cottages and new barn is constructed beside the farmhouse with the road connected to it. Farm shop has also constructed near fruit trees. Some things are same as previous. For example, farmhouse, soft fruits area, Vegetables area and chicken area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You give a relevant comparison of the farm in 1950 and today, with a clear overview that it has been substantially developed. You identify major changes, including the loss of the sheep area, the addition of camping and solar panels, and the conversion of the old barn site to holiday cottages. You also note features that remain, such as the farmhouse, crops and chicken area. This covers the main task, though some details are imprecise or underdeveloped: the new parking is not simply on both sides of the camping field, and the new barn is south-west of the farmhouse rather than merely beside it. A more precise account of the road layout and the farm shop’s position would strengthen the comparison.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, details about the earlier plan, and a contrast with the present layout. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal the organisation. The progression is generally logical, but some linking is mechanical or unclear. For example, “Looking at the details, there were few things in 1950” is followed by a list that does not clearly group the features spatially, while “Some things are same as previous” introduces another list without explaining how these features relate to the earlier description. Grouping changes and unchanged features into more clearly developed paragraphs, with precise references such as “in the south” or “to the east,” would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the plans, including “construction,” “removal,” “replaced,” and “transformation.” These choices communicate the main changes, and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, such as “barn house,” “vegetables space,” and “parking on both side.” “Sheeps” is also an incorrect plural, and “Track has also replaced from road” does not express the intended change naturally. Aim for precise map-description language and consistent terms for features, such as “area,” “field,” and “building.” More accurate collocations would make the description clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some more developed structures, including “The most noticeable transformation is…” and “Some things are same as previous. For example…”. The main meaning is usually clear, but several grammatical errors remain. Articles are missing in “farm has been developed” and “there was a separate area”; the comparison “how it looked like” is not correctly formed; and “Track has also replaced from road” has an incorrect verb construction. There are also agreement and tense inconsistencies, as in “sheeps and the river was flowing,” and the present-tense “is replaced” when describing a completed change. Practise accurate passive forms and maintain consistent past-versus-present tense choices.
