IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pictures represent the comparison of the site of a farm in 1950 and today. Several developments can be seen in the second picture as compared to the first one.
Firstly, as observed in both the maps of the beechwood farm, the location of the road and the river remains the same, however the track in 1950 is relocated as a secondary road in the present. In the farming area of fruits, soft fruits and vegetables, a farm shop is constructed in the farm of fruit trees along with a parking site opposite to it. The large area, which was for sheeps is now converted into a camping field and solar panels are installed in the northeast corner of the farm, with one more parking on the side of the road. The barn is replaced with holiday cottages and is constructed on the left of the farmhouse, on the joining point of the roads.
Overall, it can be observed that in 1950, the farm only included plants and pet animals whereas now it is developed with several facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main change from a working farm to a site with visitor facilities, and you compare several key features, including the former sheep area becoming a camping field and the addition of solar panels and parking. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the barn remains on the plan, while holiday cottages are added south of the eastern road; they do not replace the barn or sit at the road junction. The farmhouse also remains, and the fruit, soft-fruit and vegetable areas are retained rather than being described clearly as continuing features. Your overview that the site is now more developed is relevant, but the contrast between retained farming uses and new facilities could be more precise and fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a sequence of changes, and a concluding overview. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “however,” and “Overall” help the reader follow the comparison, and the information is generally grouped by location or feature. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some stronger progression. However, the main body is compressed into one long paragraph, and several details are joined in a way that makes their relationships difficult to follow—for example, the sentence about the farm shop, fruit trees and parking. The reference “opposite to it” is also not sufficiently precise on a map. Separate the main changes into clearer groups and use more exact location references.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “relocated,” “converted,” “installed,” and “northeast corner.” These choices help communicate development and location, and the meaning is generally clear. Some less natural or imprecise expressions limit the accuracy of the description: “in the farm of fruit trees” and “on the side of the road” do not clearly convey the intended positions, while “pet animals” is not an appropriate description of the farm’s animals. “Sheeps” is also an incorrect plural form. Aim for more precise map language and natural collocations, especially when describing where facilities are situated. The vocabulary is functional, but control of word choice and form is not consistently accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause with “however” and a relative clause beginning “which was for sheeps.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the comparison is understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, number and sentence construction. For example, “the location of the road and the river remains” has a plural subject and needs a plural verb; “a parking site” is less appropriately formed as “a parking area”; and “is constructed on the left” creates an unclear passive construction. The final sentence also shifts awkwardly from “included” to “is developed.” Check subject–verb agreement and keep tense choices consistent when comparing the two time periods.
