Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the subject as a comparison between the farm in 1950 and today, and it attempts an overview by saying the site has changed from agricultural use to a more modern area. However, this overview is vague and does not accurately summarise the main changes shown, such as the addition of a farm shop, camping field, solar panels, parking and holiday cottages. The only specific detail, “in 1950,” is left unfinished, so there is no meaningful comparison of the two plans. The response also falls well short of the required 150 words. To improve, complete the report and select several clear changes and features from both maps.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: it opens by introducing the maps, gives an overall statement, and then begins a section about 1950. This shows an initial sense of the expected report structure. However, the final phrase, “in 1950,” is incomplete, and the response does not progress into descriptions of either plan or comparisons between them. The linking word “whereas” signals contrast, but the contrast is not developed clearly. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main details, and connect specific changes with clear references such as “By contrast” or “In addition.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few relevant terms, including “map,” “agriculture,” “farm,” and “today,” so the topic is recognisable. However, the vocabulary is very limited for describing a site plan, and several choices or spellings reduce clarity: “comparisons agriculture farm” is not a natural phrase, while “vide range,” “morden,” and “earia” appear to be misspellings of “wide range,” “modern,” and “area.” The phrase “agricultural farms” is also imprecise. Build a more specific range for map changes, using terms such as “was replaced by,” “was converted into,” “located,” and “to the north-east.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a simple opening sentence and a contrast clause, but grammatical control is uneven. In “the map illustrates the comparisons agriculture farm,” the noun phrase is not formed correctly; a clearer structure would be “The maps compare Beechwood Farm in 1950 with its present-day layout.” The overview, “in the past in beechwood farm had,” contains an unnecessary repeated preposition and an incorrect sentence pattern. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, and “in 1950,” is left as a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Practise complete subject–verb sentences and use a consistent past tense for the earlier plan and present tense for today.
