Student answer (Band 5.5)

The plans demonstrate the site of a farm in 1950 as well as the present conditon in the same site.

Overall, in the Northeast corner are mostly changed than the past, and in the Southeast corner also did some major renovation.

In 1950, ther was a main road in the weast corner and there had a bridge on the river. the city was located beside a river. However, we found that there was track in the middle of the city, and also had a tringle. In left corner of the track, there was a place for sheep, and in the right corner, there were 3 blocks for fruit trees, soft fruits, vegetables. In addition, in the southeast corner there were three places such as barn, farmhouse, chikens.

At present, the plan has been changed a lot. The major refubrishment have been held on that area where sheep are lived, in that place a parking is made beside the main road and track junction, a camping field is created, and in the left side solar panels are setteled with a new parking area. In addition the track name is replaced by road, in the place of Barn replaced by a newly Holiday cottages, and the Barn set up just the north end of tringle. But the farmhouse and chickens were unchanged, the right side of the side road alsao almost unchanged insted of a farm shop settled in the right corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two time periods and report several relevant changes, including the conversion of the track to a road, the addition of camping and parking, and the introduction of holiday cottages. However, the overview is unclear: “in the Northeast corner are mostly changed” does not accurately summarise the main pattern, and the southeast is not explained as a major area of change. Some details are misread or imprecise: the 1950 plan shows a river, but does not identify a bridge or a city; the solar panels are in the northeast, not “the left side”; and the farm shop is between the fruit trees and road, rather than in the “right corner.” A clearer overview and more accurate comparisons of the site’s main changes would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic chronological structure, moving from the 1950 plan to the present, and paragraph breaks help distinguish the two periods. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “In addition” show an attempt to connect ideas. Nevertheless, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because locations and changes are listed without a consistent route around the plans. References such as “that area,” “in that place,” and “the right side of the side road” are not always clear, while “But” introduces a contrast that is not fully explained. Organise each period by location—for example, the western fields, northern area, then eastern buildings—and use precise references to make the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “main road,” “river,” “fruit trees,” “camping field,” and “solar panels,” and you attempt to describe change with words such as “created” and “replaced.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the map description harder to understand. “The city” is not an appropriate label for the farm site, and “major refurbishment” does not naturally describe changes to land use. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “conditon,” “tringle,” “chikens,” and “refubrishment.” Build a more precise set of map-description terms, such as “located,” “converted,” “added,” and “remained,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “where” and “and,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence structure and verb forms occur frequently: “Overall, in the Northeast corner are mostly changed” lacks a clear grammatical construction, and “the major refurbishment have been held” has faulty agreement and an unsuitable passive form. Other examples include “there had a bridge” and “the Barn set up just the north end,” where the verb patterns are incomplete or incorrect. Articles, prepositions, and punctuation also need attention, as in “in same site” and “tringle.In.” Practise accurate past and present descriptions, and use straightforward patterns such as “There was…” and “The area was converted into…” before attempting longer sentences.
