The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map bellow illutrates the changes of a farm site between in 1950 and in recent times.

Overall, it is clear that the farm has gone through several major changes, where the track is now converted into a fully construct road.

If we go through the main road there is parking in recent time and opposite of this there is a farm shop in fruit tress area. The soft tress and vegetable feild remianed unchanged throughout the period. The barn is now replaced to holiday cottage and barn moved to near chickens area. Moreover, the farmhouse and chickens area aslo remianed in the same place as before.

The sheep feild accounted a significant change. It is now converted into camping feild on the one side and solar panels being installed on the other side.Lastly, there is an another parking area in the far end of the farm besides the road and opposite of the holiday cottages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation from a farm track to a developed road network and note several important changes, including the new camping field, solar panels, farm shop and parking. You also correctly observe that the farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain in place. This gives the report a relevant overview and covers the main areas of the plan. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the barn was not replaced by holiday cottages; the cottages are south of the eastern road, while the barn remains and is repositioned near the road junction. The fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables also remain, but the farm shop is beside the fruit trees, not simply “in” that area. More precise comparisons and clearer descriptions of the barn and cottages would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a paragraph describing specific changes. The sequence from the road and fields to the eastern part of the site is generally understandable, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover” and “Lastly” help signal progression. However, the body paragraph combines several locations without a clear organising principle, and some references are difficult to follow. For example, “opposite of this” does not make clear which feature is being compared, while “the barn is now replaced to holiday cottage and barn moved” creates confusion about what changed. Grouping the western fields and new facilities separately from the eastern buildings and road would make the comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “converted,” “remained unchanged,” “farm shop,” “camping field” and “solar panels,” so the reader can identify many of the features. There is also some attempt to vary wording when describing change. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “bellow,” “illutrates,” “tress,” “feild” and “remianed.” Some combinations are also unnatural or imprecise: “fully construct road,” “soft tress,” and “accounted a significant change” do not express the intended meanings naturally. Use accurate labels from the plan and standard collocations such as “a paved road,” “fruit trees” and “underwent a significant change.” Proofreading spelling would improve clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview clause beginning “Overall” and the sentence starting “If we go through the main road.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening phrase “between in 1950 and in recent times” has an incorrect preposition pattern, and “the barn is now replaced to holiday cottage” has an inaccurate passive construction and missing article. In “the sheep field accounted a significant change,” the verb pattern is incomplete; “the sheep field underwent a significant change” would be grammatical. There are also agreement and sentence-boundary issues, such as “solar panels being installed” after a full stop. More controlled verb forms, articles and punctuation would make the range of structures more effective.
