IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the changes in Beechwoord farm from 1950 to today.

Overall, there are significant additions and few modifications to the modern farm in comparison to the former. Specifically, tracks have been modified to roads.

To the west of the road, a farm shop is constructed adjacent to the fruit trees. Soft fruits, vegetables, chickens, and farmhouse are the areas that remained unchanged, whereas, bam is relocated to the south-west of farmhouse joing the roads from east and north-west. Holiday cottages are built in the east of farm besides road replacing bam.

On the other hand, the eastern side of road had gone through major changes over the years. The area which was reserved for sheep, now comprise of two parkings, one to the east and the other to the north, solar panels in the north-east corner of the farm and camping field in the center of the two parkings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation from tracks to roads and report several important changes, including the farm shop, holiday cottages, solar panels and camping field. The overview also recognises that the modern site has additions, which gives the response a relevant overall focus. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the farmhouse and chickens remain in place, but the barn is not simply relocated to the south-west of the farmhouse; it is shown at the southern end of the road junction. The description of the former sheep area as containing “two parkings” also misses that the camping field and solar panels occupy parts of this area. The west-side changes and the retained fruit and crop areas could be compared more precisely to make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction and overview are followed by two paragraphs describing changes in different parts of the farm. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information, and phrases such as “Overall” and “On the other hand” signal the intended organisation. Some links and references are less effective, however. “To the west of the road” does not clearly establish which road or how the listed features relate spatially, while “the two parkings” refers back to parking areas without a clear explanation of their positions. The contrast introduced by “On the other hand” is also not fully developed. Use more precise location links and group features by area or by what changed and remained.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of map vocabulary, including “adjacent,” “relocated,” “reserved,” and “north-east corner,” and the reader can understand most of the changes you describe. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “significant additions” and “major changes.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, though: “few modifications” conflicts with the many additions described, “bam” is a misspelling of “barn,” and “two parkings” is not the natural way to describe two parking areas. “Joining the roads” and “in the center of the two parkings” are also imprecise. More accurate map-specific vocabulary and careful spelling would make the description clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “The area which was reserved for sheep” and a contrastive construction with “whereas.” The main ideas are usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the area … now comprise” has a subject–verb agreement error and an inconsistent tense; “a farm shop is constructed” would be better expressed in the past or present perfect for a completed change. The sentence beginning “Soft fruits, vegetables, chickens, and farmhouse are the areas…” has an unclear structure and omits an article before “farmhouse.” There are also problems with prepositions and sentence boundaries in “built in the east of farm besides road.” Aim for consistently controlled past-to-present comparisons and check agreement, articles and clause structure.
