Student answer (Band 5.0)

The plans Below show the location of a farm in 1950 and how it looks the same site today.

In 1950, Beechwood Farm located on the right side of road and situated near the banks of river, while entering to the farm on the right hand side there is a garden of fruit trees, and in today's date farm shop also available with some modification. Next to fruit trees there is a land of soft fruit tress which is connected to fruit tress and then after the third land is named for vegetables and, in this contemporary world it remains same. Morevoer in year 1950, on the left hand side of farm there is a big sheep yard located but, in this recent days we can see few changes into it like parking area build at the entrance of farm and on the land of ship yard, they grow one big tree including with camping field area. if we go straight further on the farm road we can see three diversions, so on the right side connected to the vegetables site they installed barn house and if we go further on the road we see parking area but in year 1950 on thart place there is a big barn and also in this recent days they installed solar panels on that barn place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the two time periods and mention several relevant features, including the fruit trees, soft-fruit and vegetable plots, sheep area, camping field, parking and solar panels. However, the account only partially reports the plans: there is no clear overview of the main changes, and several locations or changes are misread. For example, the barn is described as being installed beside the vegetables, whereas the present-day barn is near the farmhouse at the southern road junction; the solar panels are in the north-east corner, not on the former barn site. The farmhouse and holiday cottages are also omitted. To improve, give a concise overview first, then compare the main land-use changes accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic chronological frame, beginning with 1950 and moving to the present, and it uses linking expressions such as “Next to,” “Morevoer” and “if we go further.” These help signal some relationships between features. However, the information is largely presented in one long paragraph, and the sequence becomes difficult to follow as several locations are combined in extended sentences. Phrases such as “on the right side” and “on the left hand side” are not anchored clearly to a map orientation, while “three diversions” does not lead to a clear account of the routes. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview and two focused comparison paragraphs, using precise location references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “river,” “fruit trees,” “vegetables,” “parking area,” “camping field” and “solar panels,” so the reader can identify many of the features being discussed. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the map description unclear. For instance, “sheep yard” is not a natural label for the open sheep area, “barn house” is imprecise, and “fruit tress” appears where “fruit trees” is intended. There are also spelling errors such as “Morevoer” and “thart.” Build a bank of accurate map vocabulary, including “field,” “plot,” “located,” “replaced” and “converted,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to connect ideas using longer structures, for example “if we go straight further on the farm road we can see three diversions,” and you use present and past time references. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in sentence structure, articles, agreement and tense make parts of the description hard to interpret. In “Beechwood Farm located on the right side of road,” the main verb and article are missing; “there is a land of soft fruit” also has an awkward grammatical pattern. The shifts between “in 1950,” “today” and “in this recent days” are not consistently controlled. Use shorter, complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles and tense when comparing past and present.
