IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show the site of a farm in 1950 and the same site today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagrams illustrates the site of beechwood farm how it looks in 1950 and how it looks today and there is a lot of changes and we talk about it.

In 1950, there are fruit trees near the track but now some trees are cutted and a farm shop was built and trees are planted beside it whereas, the soft fruits and vegetables shops are same as earlier. And on the other side of the road there is a sheep or a empty space but now a parking was built in a little place and a camping field and solar panels was also built there in the remaining place.

Afterthat, if we go little away there is a barn, farmhouse and chickens canal was built besides it in 1950 but now the barn was diminshed and a holiday cottages is built but the farmhouse and chickens canal was at there same place as earlier.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the two time periods and report several relevant changes, including the farm shop, camping field, solar panels and holiday cottages. However, the account is only partly accurate and developed: the fruit trees are not described as being cut down, and the barn remains on the site rather than being diminished or removed. The soft-fruit and vegetable areas also remain, but calling them “shops” misrepresents the map. The response lacks a clear overview of the main transformation, such as the shift from a mainly agricultural site to one with visitor facilities and new energy infrastructure. To strengthen the report, summarise that overall change first, then compare the main areas accurately and include the road and parking changes where relevant.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic chronological structure: it first discusses the western fields and then moves to the buildings farther away. This gives the reader some sense of how the site changed. However, there is no distinct overview, and the long second paragraph combines several locations and changes in a way that makes relationships difficult to follow. Linking expressions such as “whereas” and “Afterthat” are either awkwardly used or insufficient to show clear comparisons. Some references, including “the remaining place” and “besides it,” are also unclear. Organise the report into a brief overview followed by paragraphs grouped by location or feature, and use precise comparisons such as “while the fields remained, new visitor facilities were added.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “fruit trees,” “farm shop,” “camping field,” “solar panels” and “holiday cottages,” so the reader can recognise several key features. However, the range is limited and some word choices make the information inaccurate or unclear: “soft fruits and vegetables shops” suggests shops rather than fields, and “chickens canal” does not describe the enclosure. There are also noticeable errors in forms and spelling, such as “cutted” and “diminshed,” alongside repetitive use of “built” and “place.” Use the labels from the map accurately and vary verbs with terms such as “remained,” “was added,” “was converted” or “was retained.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example with “but now” and “whereas,” but these structures are often faulty or difficult to follow. Errors occur in subject–verb agreement (“The diagrams illustrates”), articles and noun phrases (“a empty space”), and tense or passive forms (“a parking was built,” “solar panels was also built”). The final sentence also has an unclear structure, particularly “the farmhouse and chickens canal was at there same place.” These frequent problems sometimes make the intended comparisons harder to understand. Practise writing shorter, controlled comparison sentences first, then combine them using accurate past and present forms—for example, “The farmhouse remained, while holiday cottages were added nearby.”
