Student answer (Band 5.5)

The layout plans describe about the changes in the site of Beechwood Farm between 1950 to as of today.

Overall, the farm has undergone several major changes, by turning into a tourist spot from a farm land. There's an addition of accomodation spaces and energy resourcing. Although, some areas remained same but the walking track has been transformed into vehicular paths.

The entrance from the main road remians the same, the track has been converted into road and parking space has been provided at the start and at the end of the road at right side into the sheep area. That area has been totally transformed and converted into camping field, with the addition of tree. The Solar panels are also provided there to fulfil energy requirements. The barn has been moved from the main road to the traingular edge of connecting roads. Holiday cottages has been provided for staying purposes. The location of farmhouse and chickens remained at same place at the right bottom corner.

The fruit trees, soft fruits and vegetables are at the same place then in 1950, adjacent to road and connecting to river from bottom edge. The farm shop has aso been constructed in fruit trees area for the facilitation in shopping of visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main transformation from a working farm to a site with visitor facilities, and your overview also notes that some agricultural areas remain. Several relevant changes are reported, including the camping field, solar panels, cottages, parking and farm shop. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the farmhouse and chicken enclosure remain in the same general area, but the barn is not simply moved from the main road; it is shown at the southern road junction. The sheep area becomes a camping field, but the solar panels are in the north-east corner, rather than clearly within that field. Your description of the crops as being in the same place is broadly useful, though their relationship to the roads and river could be more precise. Develop these comparisons more carefully and cover the site’s main changes with consistent spatial detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes. This helps the reader follow the broad contrast between farming and visitor use. However, progression within the detail paragraphs is sometimes difficult to track because several locations and changes are packed into long sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “The entrance from the main road” moves from the entrance to parking, the sheep area, camping and solar panels without clear separation. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly repeated use of “and” and “The…”. Organise the details by area or by what changed and what remained, and use clearer references such as “in the north-east” or “by contrast” to guide the reader through the plan.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a site plan, including “camping field”, “solar panels”, “holiday cottages”, “farm shop” and “adjacent”. This gives you enough range to communicate the main changes. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, such as “energy resourcing”, “tourist spot” and “for the facilitation in shopping of visitors”; these make the description less fluent. There are also spelling errors, including “accomodation”, “remians”, “traingular” and “aso”. Aim for concise, conventional map-description language and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for location and change would also help distinguish facilities that are near one another from those that occupy the same area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, especially with articles, agreement and sentence construction. For example, “between 1950 to as of today” uses an incorrect time construction, while “Holiday cottages has been provided” has a plural subject with a singular verb. “Although, some areas remained same” is not formed correctly as a subordinate clause, and “the same place then in 1950” uses the wrong comparative structure. There are also awkward passive constructions, such as “Solar panels are also provided there”. Use accurate past-to-present comparisons, check subject–verb agreement, and make sure each sentence has a complete, well-formed clause.
