Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the two time periods and make several relevant comparisons, including the addition of a farm shop and holiday cottages and the continued presence of the river and chickens. However, the overview is unclear and some details are inaccurate: the sheep area is not simply converted into solar panels, camping and parking, and the road layout has changed rather than remaining “still same.” The barn’s new position is also described vaguely. Important changes such as the farmhouse remaining and the new camping facilities could be reported more precisely. The response is 125 words, below the 150-word minimum; the eight words copied from the task prompt are excluded from this count. Develop the main changes with accurate locations and a clearer overall summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic overall structure, beginning with an introduction and then attempting to summarise changes. It also uses time references such as “in 1950” and “today” to signal comparisons. However, the main paragraph reads as a series of loosely connected observations rather than a clearly organised account. The repeated “But” and “and” do not show the relationships between features reliably, and the sentence beginning “In 1950 fruit trees area…” runs into several separate comparisons. Group related changes—for example, land use in the western area and buildings or facilities in the east—and use clear linking phrases such as “whereas” and “in addition.” This would give the information a more logical progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “farm shop,” “solar panels,” “camping field,” “holiday cottages,” and “river,” so the reader can identify many of the features being compared. However, the range of language for describing change and location is limited, and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “road tracks,” “sheep area converts,” and “barn in different place.” “The diagram explain the comparisons” is also an imprecise way to introduce a map description. Use more precise expressions such as “the sheep pasture was replaced by…” or “the barn was relocated.” A wider range of accurate verbs and location phrases would make the comparisons clearer and reduce repetition of “same” and “today.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Most sentences rely on simple structures, and attempts to combine ideas often contain errors that make the meaning less clear. For example, “There are number of changes made” is missing an article and has an awkward verb construction; “the road tracks…is still same” has agreement and article problems; and “Soft fruits have same” is not a complete, accurate comparison. There are also inconsistent verb forms, as in “sheep area converts,” and punctuation is weak where several ideas are joined together. Practise accurate past and present forms for map comparisons, including “was replaced,” “remains,” and “has been added.” Building a few controlled complex sentences with “while” or “whereas” would improve range without sacrificing accuracy.
