Student answer (Band 6.0)
Across various countries , the summer vacation for primary, and secondary school children are given for two month, and sometimes even more. In this essay, I will share how effective these long vacations are with an opinion for the side effects it has.
One one hand , summer vacations are the perfect time for children to relax after the busy schedule of completing homeworks, and attending classes for months. During such free time vacations and spend quality time with families helps with stronger relati . Summer can be enjoyed beside seaside where children can swim as well as connect better with the nature. Aside from the fun side its an opportunity for children to learn a skill for example: bicycing or cooking which would be beneficial for children to keep them active.
On the other hand, electronic devices are used for children to keep them calm and busy by many parents as working full time jobs and making time for them for almost 120 days is difficult . There are several shows, games or cartoons for children to watch but too much of screen time has led to eyesight and migrane issues among children . Aside the physical problems becoming addicted to electronic devices are increasing in alarming rate when kids cannot socialize in public gathering or take meals without watching videos. As a result watching screens could be an easier way for parents to keep children entertained.
Overall, vacations during summer can be utilised well for learning new skills whereas long holidays of such could be a time when children gets involded with digital devices. In my opinion summer holidays could be shorted so kids are learning through school assigments.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both questions and gives a clear overall view: long holidays allow children to rest, spend time with family and learn skills, while shorter holidays are presented as a way to reduce excessive screen use. These are relevant points, and the examples of swimming, cooking and device-related problems help illustrate them. However, the value of long holidays is developed more fully than the case for shorter ones. The discussion of screens explains a possible problem during long breaks, but does not clearly explain how shorter holidays would address it or consider other arguments for shortening breaks, such as maintaining learning continuity. The conclusion states a preference, but the phrase about learning through school assignments is not fully explained. Develop this reasoning and support the comparison more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signposted by “On one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a concluding opinion. The ideas generally progress from the benefits of free time to concerns about screen use, so the reader can follow the main argument. This organisation is effective, though some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Aside the physical problems” does not smoothly connect the ideas, and the sentence beginning “During such free time” is difficult to follow because several points are compressed together. The conclusion also introduces school assignments without a clear link to the preceding reasoning. Use clearer references and transitions, and make each paragraph’s central point explicit before adding examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses a relevant range of vocabulary, including “quality time,” “socialize,” “addicted,” and “screen time,” which helps communicate the topic. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “alarming rate” and “beneficial,” although some combinations are unnatural or imprecise. Examples include “the summer vacation … are given,” “connect better with the nature,” and “learning through school assignments.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “bicycing,” “migrane,” and “involded” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe holidays as “provided” or “given,” and say children can “spend time in nature.” This would make the vocabulary more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There is an attempt to use both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “where,” “which,” and “when.” The main message is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors make particular sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “the summer vacation … are given for two month” has problems with agreement and number, while “During such free time vacations and spend quality time with families helps” lacks a clear grammatical structure. In the conclusion, “children gets” also shows an agreement error, and punctuation spacing is inconsistent. Practise building complete sentences around one main clause, then check subject–verb agreement, articles and plural forms. More accurate control of these patterns would make the ideas easier to follow.
