Student answer (Band 7.0)

The primary and secondary schools close the institutes for two to three months in summer holidays. In these holidays, they give the children a lot of homework to do and some other activities as well. i disagree with this. some people believe that the summer holidays should be significantly reduced.

Firstly, a two month break disrupts the continuity of learning. Educational research consistently shows that students experience significant knowledge loss, often called the "summer slide", when they are away from the structured study for extended period. Teachers frequently spends the first few weeks of a new term revision.

Secondly, extended holidays create practical difficulties for working parents. Since most parents work full-time throughout the year it is quiet challenging for hem to manage the child care along with their practical life. reducing the length of holidays at school can bring ease the burden considerably. Arranging childhood care for consecutive two months is often expensive and challenging.

Thirdly, long idle periods can foster negative habits such a excessive screen time and physical inactivity, which leads to the childhood obesity and reduce social development.Shorter holidays would allow children regular but manageable rest periods without the risks associated with prolonged inactivity.

In conclusion, while holidays are essential for rest and some family time, a two month summer break is excessive. I believe schools should adopt a system of shorter, more frequent holidays throughout the year, as this would better support academic performances, ease pressure on working families, and promote healthier routines for children.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the 'summer slide' and the challenges for working parents. However, the first paragraph is slightly underdeveloped; you mention that schools give homework, but you do not explicitly explain the 'value' of the long break itself, which is a key part of the prompt. To reach a higher band, ensure you explicitly discuss the benefits of the current system (e.g., mental rejuvenation or family bonding) before transitioning to your counter-arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use transition signals like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Thirdly', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your arguments. The progression of ideas is generally smooth. However, some cohesive devices are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'the institutes' in the first sentence, which lacks a clear antecedent. Additionally, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be more fluid. Overall, the structure is clear and serves the purpose of the essay well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'disrupts the continuity of learning', 'structured study', and 'prolonged inactivity' are effective and appropriate for an academic context. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'bring ease the burden' (should be 'ease the burden') and 'childhood care' (should be 'childcare'). While you attempt some less common vocabulary, there is room for more sophisticated collocations to elevate the response to a higher band. The spelling is generally accurate throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Teachers frequently spends' (subject-verb agreement), 'quiet challenging for hem' (spelling/word choice), and 'leads to the childhood obesity' (unnecessary article). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for small typos. You have a good grasp of complex structures, but increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
