What are the arguments in favour of shorter school holidays?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In several nations the summer vacation is provided to school students for about 60 days or more. The duration of this holidays is being concerned. Both the views are elaborated in detail with suitable example in ensuing paragraphs.

There are so many benefits of longer summer vacation as it allow us to perform several activities. The foremost is that students can join any skill class and acquire higher knowledge and skills regarding their it - which can boost their academic performance. Moreover, they can work in part time job to understand the struggle and become economically independent. Additionally, they can spend time with their friends and family also, they can explore the nearby cities and area.

In contrast to that there are few merits of shorter vacation. Firstly, this will reduce the distraction caused by excessive use of mobile phones, as during vacation they are more likely to get addicted to it. Whereas, during schools they are not getting enough time to spend on mobile phones due to homework and task given by school. Secondly, it may create a huge gap in studies, as the daily habit of reading and studying might have vanished and it may result in lack of concentration towards studies.

On the way to conclude, there are few merits and demerits of both long as well as short vacation. one should consider both while taking any crucial decision although the values of longer vacation might outweigh the shorter vacation and this should taken care of as per my perspective.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the value of long holidays and the arguments for shorter ones. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the point about 'part-time jobs' is mentioned but not explained in terms of how it specifically relates to the value of a long break. The position is clear, but the conclusion is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or deeper analysis for each point, rather than listing several ideas briefly. The response is balanced, but the depth of argument is limited, which keeps it at a 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'In contrast to that'. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'On the way to conclude'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a strong topic sentence that clearly introduces the main argument. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'academic performance', 'economically independent', and 'distraction'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'The duration of this holidays is being concerned' and 'this should taken care of'. The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('this holidays is', 'this should taken care of') and missing articles. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and minor errors that occasionally distract the reader. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent verb tense usage would significantly improve your score.
